This song has always had an air of quiet composure, mixed with sinister, even murderous undertones. Even the title befits the way the song is structured It peaks your curiosity, and makes you just a little bit uncomfortable, as all great art should. Hozier and Shawn James are changing the game, and so many people are barely even noticing (except for Take Me to Church and Through The Valley which both got A LOT of attention)

He only very briefly touches the grand apex of the song (at 3:13). It comes on so slowly and he only addresses it for one line of one verse, then goes back down slower. It's like he knows only touching the climax of the song so briefly makes the moment special, rather than dwelling there and rinsing the riff until you get numb to it. Still I would love to have heard more of it.

Some may see this song as badass or dark, but when I hear these words, I am reminded. Reminded of what I have to do. What I will always have. My passion, my fire. My dreams, the place I have to reach. My demons are the part of me that rages against the dying of the light. While I can’t let myself lose control, I can’t lie down. Not yet. Not yet... I will never lie down. Not until I reach the end of this long road ahead of me. I will never lose the fire in my heart. It’s all I have. Now c’mon demons, let’s show the world we won’t be tamed, even if we can’t break free of this leash.

Basking in the fire filling my veins full of smoke Skin melting I thought the devil was a joke Now I turn to the sky and pour out my feelings.oh god save me from this voice in me When I cried I knew he heard my name Dear Lord spill my blood and offer me As a sacrifice for your will Oh god you hold so much power All I need is you to see What demons are lurking in me I took your love for granted Now I hear the one you escaped I need you To take my wings and give them back to me Oh Lord feel my pain in my heart Always keeping it on the sheets

Masterful in EVERY way! Somehow it feels so mellow and calming, a couple pops of metal riffs to grab your attention back, then the lyrics grab you like a jockstrap full of fish hooks and won't let go! This is pure talent and PERSONAL enjoyment we're seeing here. The almost scary part? This is his COMFORT zone. None of this is a challenge to him vocally... When he finally cuts that power he's holding back loose, they may have to scrape all of us off the floor -- again! ❤‍🔥

As a demon who really hated leashes: let me assure you he’s wrong. We are so grateful to have the leash removed, we’d do almost anything you don’t ask. And we won’t forget an act of kindness like that. We’re forever loyal to anyone who would be so generous. And that you can trust.
