Hozier was so on point with that line! Being indifferent to pain is a common thing survivors of abuse do because when you’re abused for long periods of time, it comes to a point where you unconsciously decide to be numb to your emotions as to not suffer so much anymore, it’s a defense mechanism. It takes years, sometimes decades of therapy to learn how to be comfortable being vulnerable again because the biggest scar abusive relationships leave are emotional scars. I don’t know if this song was based on his personal experiences, but if they are not, he totally did his research right.

It's rough because it sounds like a beautiful love song. But I think that just adds so much to this song because it really helps people who've never been abused understand how it feels when you're still under their spell, but are aware their behaviors are abusive.
@astralsheepu73794 жыл бұрын
@@Kokeebbb yeah the whole song is all about domestic violence. Throwing things at him, hitting, cheating, general horrible abuse, but the guy stays because the good times are "worth" the pain. The same way almost all abuse victims are so caught in the love they think the pain is no big deal. Almost every line is about hitting/hurting/verbal abuse towards the guy. "blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine" = yeah she hurts me enough to draw blood, but I can take it, and love her so much I write it off as part of her love.

@@kyle996 imo opinion here’s what it brings to mind: The abuse is emotional and verbal as well as just physical, and even the physical abuse doesn’t tend to leave a mark. On the rare occasions that any visible damage is caused, it’s likely the abuser makes attempts to compensate for that by being overly sweet and pretending to be concerned and really remorseful. That is at least how it’s been in bad relationships I’ve experienced. So I always kind of took it to mean something along the lines of “it’s not that bad because you rarely ever physically hurt me, and even then it’s bittersweet because that’s when you’re the most attentive and lovely to me.”

@krisztinarieger32334 жыл бұрын
I hope you know you are very strong because you left for your own safety. it's the hardest thing to leave someone who is abusive and toxic. my ex girlfriend (I'm a wlw as well) cheated on me, threw me out, then got jealous and angry whenever someone tried to approach me and she hit me all the time even if a girl just tried to be my friend. at first she did it with a pillow, but the last time (a year ago) it was with her closed fist and his full power against my head. I've never seen her like that before, but I thought I got to know her in our 1 year relationship (that ender half year before this incident). at first I thought it was my fault, but then I realised it's not me who is guilty. I also came to the realisation that I need to let go of toxic people. so here I am, in a healhy and happy relationship now with a wonderful girl :) I wish you the best and I hope you have already found happiness :)

Third verse kinda hurts me the most. “Her fight and fury is fiery Oh, but she loves like sleep to the freeze Sweet and right and merciful, I’m all but washed in the tide of her breathing”. He ignores the pain because of the love he receives. When they have sex is when things are peaceful, and when things are peaceful, the abused are reminded of why they love the abuser and why they can’t leave. I also take note that this part being about sex is yet another male victim’s curse. We as a society has not only made sex so important to women, but men. The difference is, most women are taught about consent and taught that it’s okay to not want to have sex. Sex shouldn’t be the way someone shows they love you. I notice that with a lot of the abused women, men manipulate by doing things like buying flowers, or going on dates, but a lot of abused men are manipulated by sex. This is the way their abuser “rewards” them. It makes me cry because no matter how much pain is caused, the abused stay because of that hope that the person they love will change, and become the person they were when they first started. So many people asked the abused, “well, you stay int the relationship, why? They’re hurting you, leave them”, but they forget that the abused has once fell in love with a different person and that hope that that person will come back isn’t going to go away. Love is powerful, and although it is good most of the time, it can be the thing that kills us.

abuse tends to stem from massive ego issues, abusers arent really "themselves" when they are abusing, usually their controlling toxic side is the result of a defensive ego that came about from trauma in their own lives. none of this excuses or makes it okay, but thats probably why it felt like you never got to know her, she was always protecting herself through a lens of ego and control, showing her true self would be a weakness, and she learned long ago to never accept weakness.

This is my first time listening to Hozier, its been in my reccomended a lot latley so I figured I'd give it a go. I'll be back with my final thoughts after i listen. Edit: My Opinion: I really loved it, his voice was so calming and it had that natural sound, the soft guitar complimented it perfectly. I definitely will be checking out more of his music.

I agree I only recently got into his music but its very beautiful to listen too. I'd recommend, if you havent heard it, 'like real people do'. It has that very acoustic, gentle sound to it

TIL this song is sad.. I rly liked the intro, the tabs, the tune, it made me fell for it as it's very easy and clean to the ears, sweet and mellow.. I listen to but nver rly knew the exact lyrics, not givin it so much attention and it changed today.. Ohdearme

Replace “sweet as cherry wine” with “reeks of cherry wine” when you sing along. You get the actual meaning of the song. Holy shit.

As someone who just got out of an abusive wlw relationship this hits hard. She would ignore me for weeks and refused to say she loved me constantly. The things we go through when we wear rose colored glasses..
@java46563 жыл бұрын
Binged this song about 7 months ago. January 2021. I never properly listened to the lyrics for a good few weeks. And then I realised why I was so addicted to this song - it was about learning to love abusive relationships, the same thing I was going through. Every last word resonated with me once I read through it. I got out of that relationship after a year in June. She left me for another guy she had been talking to for a few months. This is coming from a girl who constantly accused me of cheating on her with people that stretched as far my step-sister. I'm very happy now, and I really hope that anybody who's currently trapped in toxicity can make a break for it. You *can* do it. It doesn't matter what they say. You can.

I haven't seen it brought up but the, "mama don't fuss over me" line makes this feel like a young guy with no idea the damage being done to him, or that it isn't normal in healthy relationships, and it hurts so much more

Growing up I watched my father get abused by my mother, he never talked about it or did anything to try and get away from it just took the hits and the abuse and carried on so I thought that was normal in relationships and sadly I got into many abusive relationships with different men. But I just got out of one and my father has been separated from my mother for years now and we are both doing better.

I really appreciate the narrative of this song. Most of his music is in a sort of first/second person pov, but this is more like a telling of a story, but from first person. It's like he's telling someone else of something he's currently going through because he can't bring himself to confront the woman he's with, all the while finding excuses for her actions and why he stays through the abuse.
@angelmcpherson20854 жыл бұрын
“Calls of guilty thrown at me all while she stains the sheets of some other” is just pointing out how the abusive partner can place all the blame on their victim for their own wrong decisions and horrible actions, like cheating. And the victim truly believes that it is their own fault
I've been listening to this a lot lately; it reminds me of a trauma bond I still have and makes me feel not so alone or so abnormal for missing him.

Not really a victim of domestic violence but I am a victim of emotional abuse, I am the youngest of three and being the youngest just made me be the punching bag for everything regardless of whether it was my fault, partially my fault, or not at all. As a child I was always called a liar, a useless worthless child, an airhead, and many others and I grew up with those words that i wanted to change but no believed I changed. They kept calling me those kinds of names despite the fact that I have changed and soon, I grew desensitized to hearing them that I became a distant child to my family. That only proved to be the wrong move because not only did I keep hearing them more often but they upped it, making me feel worse than before and its harder to keep a strong front when inside I just wanted to disappear. My only solace is running away from them and sleeping in my friends' houses but even that has its limits before I return back to that toxic place called home.

to everyone, you matter. we may be a very small part of this universe but every speck of the world matters. don't give up. take it from someone who has tried it before. this life is only the beginning and you never want to miss a part of the first few chapters. please just take this message as you need it. life is worth the fight. life is divine if you make it that way. blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine.

"her fight and fury is fiesty but oh her love is like sleep to the freezing" GOD that is so smart and raw. i wishh i could write like that. sleep is supposed to be smth to give u warmth, safety and comfort. but if someone is freezing and they sleep its likely to kill them, but its a peaceful death. sleep is a tiny peaceful escape from the cold but u know its going to harm u even more. thats what loving her is like. u know what ur doing is killing u but u do it anyways. ahhhh so so mart god i love hozier.
