I am very much looking forward to a demonstration of this machine's features for phase modulation. Thanks for the vid!

Hello Donald, it's a really strange experience to see modulation expressed in radians instead of deviation in kHz or modulation depth in %. I really haven't done much with this this instrument other than the basics. Once I have the time to learn more I'll have to make a video on it's operation. Thanks for watching!

@@CraigPetersen12f36b Well, just remember that 2 pi radians is 1 wavelength. So if you shift a signal's phase by 1 pi radians, that's 180 degrees, or one half a wavelength.

I just got one for free . Got this one and a 8793B VNA. Both in good condition. A welcome addition to my shop.

Sweet! Can't beat free. I have yet to get a good VNA so in the meantime I use a NanoVNA-F v2, good enough for doing the basics. I'm still going through the users manual and programming section for my 8901B and have learned quite a bit since posting this video.

How do you like it a year later?

Hello Scott. So far so good, does virtually everything I need it to. While I haven't really put it to extensive use, or explored all of its functions, it works really well at measuring deviation, modulation depth, phase modulation, frequency, power, SINAD and other modulation distortion measurements. The unit can even use standard HP RF power sensors or the optional HP 11722A power sensor. The manual is quite extensive, as is the GPIB programming section. However with other HP instruments of this vintage they do take up a bit of shelf space. Thanks for watching!

@@CraigPetersen12f36b looks very nice. I've been eyeing up a HP 8920A. Definitely don't need it, but I see a lot of benefits from having a quote on quote all in one device as well as having multiple standalone testing devices.
