I think its crazy how people throw out perfectly good 'junk', or a lot of the time not as much of a piece of junk as a finder might discover.. A lot of people throw out computers with maybe a HD error or another flaw, and don't realize how important some parts can be. RAM, HD, screen,...

That was an awesome find. I have two of the same model with the Core-2 Duo CPU at 2.40GHz. I bought them for €50 each with the docking stations from my wife's work. The IT department was upgrading all the office laptops to models running i5 and i7 processors. These older HPs were now redundant. They both have 4GB of RAM. By the way, the default RAM slot is under the keyboard. It's not hard to get to and upgrade to a 4GB card if you want. You just loosen 3 screws underneath and remove 4 retaining clips on the keyboard. The motherboard will see a max of 8GB RAM, 2x4GB cards. I've removed the optical drives and replaced them with hard drive caddies. Giving the machines two drives. They both came with fresh installations of licenced Windows 7. This is been nuked on one machine. That's running a Linux desktop distro, Manjaro 16.06.1 JWM 64-bit (Testing repos). It's just for a bit of fun while I wait for two new 1TB HDDs to arrive. Manjaro is installed to a 60GB SSD with a 160GB HDD as a /DATA partition and for swap. It goes like rocket on this laptop. Linux really runs like a champ on this model of laptop. The laptop's final function when the new HDDs arrive, is going to be a home server. It'll be running Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS 64-bit headless with remote access using DDNS. I think It'll make a great little server. You already know how quiet the thing is. It'll sit next to the router, quietly doing its thing. I'm really looking forward to putting this together and have it up and running. The other laptop is going to have Windows nuked too. I've no use for it. It'll be fitted with the 60GB SSD and a new 250GB HDD. It'll have Peppermint 7 64-bit installed on the SSD and the 250GB HDD will be used for a /DATA partition and swap. That's going out to my elderly mother-in-law in Bulgaria. She already has a little Acer Aspire One D250 running Peppermint Six. She loves that and now wants a beefier machine with a 14.1" screen. I'm sure she's going to love Peppermint 7 on this great little laptop. Yeah, you really found a little gem with that machine.

Reminds me of the time I got a ThinkPad T420 laptop... I received it with a failing hard drive (Which was a Seagate 7200rpm, ran for 2 years, 8 months, and 6 days). USB booting was an absolute pain, because it doesn't work with some flash drives at all. The heatsink was clogged full of dust, so I cleaned that out, once I could separate the fan from the thing. The screws are a no-brainer, but the tape is a pain. I did eventually install a new hard drive, and it now has 16GB of ram instead of the 4 I received it with. The laptop is now working probably better than it did from the factory. The battery has lost 2/3 of it's original capacity, but that doesn't bother me.

You literally can't buy a laptop like that anymore. They got rid of things like firewire and Expresscard slots in the new ones. The SC slot is for a Smartcard for use with two factor authentication. Honestly, just throw Windows 7 on the machine. It likely has the OEM SLIC markers for it in the BIOS being that its from 2009 so activation isn't a problem.

The video issue could also be from the GPU itself-- if it's the ATI-based 6930p, it's most likely that indeed, but I doubt it seeing as it has a Centrino sticker (Centrino being the umbrella term for a laptop with an Intel CPU, GPU, and wireless card.) seeing as we (NJ) did just get some rain, I'd expect it to have been moisture or some other liquid. a suggestion is to check Intel's site for the up-to-date drivers for the 4500M HD and wireless card installed, assuming that the card is Intel as-per the Centrino sticker. that'll hold it if it's going to be running XP well past the EOL date, and will enable GPU decoding of videos, including Flash and 1080p KZbin videos... the HP-supplied XP drivers do not. on a closing note, I am extremely jelly of the P8600 in there. not only does it have a bumped-up FSB compared to the T8300 in my D630, but it supposedly runs cooler doing tasks related to virtualization because of that FSB bump from 800MHz. Lucky!

Have you fixed the errors? I noticed when you were in the System Information screen it didn't show any sign of a serial number. The Elitebook BIOS allows you to modify the motherboard's serial number, so your serial number error could be pointing to the number not being in the BIOS.

I used to get a bunch of stuff from the recycling center in town. My best finds were two Dell Optiplex 740s and a Thinkpad T43. The Dells worked, Thinkpad did not. But I managed to fix it (basically just bought a whole nother Thinkpad). They eventually told me I couldn't take stuff out anymore. And now when I take stuff there (dead laptops, LCD screens, stuff I can't repair, etc) they hurl it against the metal wall of the dumpster. I guess that's their method of keeping me from getting nice things for free.

Hello dude. Download HP Softpaq downloader - it will get all the drivers for you and install them (albeit slowly as there are a lot of drivers for these elitebooks, I have the 8440p) I can see you've already cornered the drivers problem, but its worth knowing in case you upgrade the OS to 7 or need to format/reinstall XP. The other ram module will be underneath the keyboard - unscrews from the bottom of the laptop and then there will be some little notches you just push toward the hinges and the keyboard lifts out. That is how my 8440p is. Nice find - I rate my Elitebook as highly as my Thinkpad, nice solid machines :)

The invalid serial number can be due to a motherboard being replaced because you have to program the serial number and model # and a bunch of other crap. Something like a DMIEDIT tool would do it, however there are special HP dmiedit tools you have to hunt around for specific models for it to program the serial # usually only HP Techs are supposed to have these but you can google them and usually find nice people who have uploaded them.

EliteBook is HP's mobile computer business line. the reason for the error could be the anti-theft technology of the BIOS if the system board was being replaced or repaired by HP and not putting on the serial number. The reason is common to HP Notebook PCs with the HP Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) beginning in late-2008, if the service technian not putting in the new serial number. the only way to repair the error is contacting HP . the smart card slot is used by businesses for ID's as a long in device instead of using passwords
