There's too many people reporting bad sweet spots or poor eyebox. I'm definitely one of them and it has nothing to do with the facial interface or distance from the lens. There's so many reports that Sebastian is having people send him their G2s to see if there is an actual problem from headset to headset or if it's just personal fit. We'll know soon enough if this is as good as it gets or if there's going to be a bunch or RMAs.
@StellarContinuumGaming3 жыл бұрын
@@alteredworks I don't know if you can, as a person, say that it doesn't have anything to do with face shape or eye distance (IPD or lens). I strongly suspect there will be some related to that and a bunch more related to QC issues and variances. For me, it's great with an IPD at closest inward. I can comfortably shift with will little to no distortion. I linked to Sebastian's video in the pinned comment and urge everyone to follow the investigation.
@alteredworks3 жыл бұрын
@@StellarContinuumGaming I absolutely agree that face geometry plays a large role in our perception of VR, however it's not a complicated endeavor to rule out certain aspects that may impact the perception of the sweet spot. Removal of the facial interface and finding the dead center of the sweet spot for a single eye is straight forward. In spite of this, it is easy to see how the focus of the lenses drops off rather quickly. I find the sweet spot about on par with other headsets, but the field of view that's in focus isn't very optimal. At least this is what me and a significant portion of users are experiencing. I think what Sebastian at MRTV is doing is fantastic by trying as bunch of them to find out. We will have a definitive answer about any unit to unit varience or anecdotal experience. Given that there's also issues with DSE banding (I have it) it's not a stretch to be worried about other manufacturing issue. BTW, I really appreciate your video.

"People in the internet" just tell their experiences, and this are mine: I tried every possible lighting setup, and in some games it works fine, but in some others it works bad and in some games it is just unplayable. Examples: In Alyx it works fine, in Asgard's wrath i.e. when you throw axes you hit maybe with one of three, while hitting everything with for example the Oculus cv1 tracking, and knockout league is unplayable because you hardly hit anything because of controllers working like attached to the hands with rubber bands.

I got my G2 a few days ago. Another thing to mention is many games do not support WMR controls out of the gate. You have to do a ton of tweaking to get things working right in a number of games, and some like Borderlands 2 VR, I've found anyway are simply unplayable due to the crosshair being off center and a multitude of other control incompatibilities.
@StellarContinuumGaming3 жыл бұрын

Pretty sure this is changing, much thanks to the G2 even. MSFS 2020 really put the G2 in the spotlight. I think the future looks great for WMR headsets from now on. I'm pretty certain you're not the only one with those issues. The main problems have been either hardware based (faulty device), software based (misconfigured USB, etc.) or, most likely, not using 1.5v batteries in an area that is neither too bright nor too dark. This is a limitation of WMR - something they really need to look at. Someone else also commented that their controller sticks also didn't work and signaled the "wrong direction". I just opened it yesterday for the first time. This is my first headset, but i can tell you that people with wider IPD(I am guessing this is the reason) will have problems with this device. I guess i have this, because i found the problem a lot of people reports - in the middle of the screen when your eyes are focused you will see sharp image but once you roll your eyes without any head movement everything becomes really blurry... and forget about this super high clear image. And believe me I tried every possible way and position to put this thing on my head. I use native high resolution but it has got nothing to do with lenses, IPD and clarity. I expected something better. Since this is my first VR toy i am still super excited, but for me, after all this "YT influancers" hype train, than HP preorders tale of endless f..up... i really think press and media for this device are overrated and misleading. Another thing is that Windows mixed reality is a total garbage software(like almost everything microsoft does), tracking is exactly what other people says...NOT GOOD! Overall decent piece of hardware but nothing exceptional or ground breaking as they claim. Recomended for people with monster(3080!) hardware who likes to play sim games. Unfortunately I have the same opinion as Vincent S regarding the sweet spot on this unit, it is very small and very noticeable compared to a Rift-s/CV1, many people are reporting/complaining about it. Stellar that is a good idea about contacting HP I might have to just to get some clarification or whether perhaps my lenses are faulty, if the sweet spot which I estimate is around 10-15% of the screen was twice that size there wouldn’t be a problem and id be happy but anytime I think about moving my eyes anywhere but straight I will notice a slight blur which is leading to an uncomfortable experience, its a bit like having a spotlight on the top of my head and have to move my full head and not my eyes to see continuous clarity

Great review. Great info! I loved the Samsung Odyssey Plus HMD, but I do struggle with liking those big WMR rings and all those LEDs on the controllers, but wasn't terrible (overall as good or better ...probably better...than the Vive Wands, as there is the thumbstick PLUS the touchpad on the O+ controllers). The major thing though is: I just DO NOT like the WMR Cliff House. I wish it could go away and strictly use Steam. Cheers!

Good review, I owned one and returned it. I was not blown away by the hp g2, even the headset is a bit sluggish compared to base station tracking. LED blacks don’t do well compared to OLED. The lenses are a step up, but godrays and glare still present. It’s redeeming quality is it’s no SDE. But it lacks in many others, notably controller tracking and even minor headset sluggish ness. WMR still needs to mature more and something is up between WMR and steam client that add micro lag. But agreed, this unit is fine for simmers. On a personal note, I wish for a headset that supports both fresnel lenses and regular cheap lenses like what is found in a lens mod. I had done that to my vive pro and I struggle to back to fresnel.

I'm working on the gameplay footage and had gathered a lot of "through the lens" footage but the quality (of the recording) was so bad due to sync issues, it wouldn't have been a good representation of how amazing it looks. I'm working on getting a better camera for it now. I tried sims and action titled, the sims to see how big of a difference it makes (a lot when reading gauges) and quick reflex games (Beat Saber, Until You Fall) to test the tracking accuracy and responsiveness (generally fine). The biggest impact came from keeping a moderate amount of lighting in the room. Switching off the room lights caused a lot of issues with both headset and controller tracking - things that didn't happen with lighthouse tracking. I've been working on pairing the Vive wands with this HMD. What have been your initial impressions?

Are there really tracking "issues"? Seems to me that working within its limitations cannot be called an "issue". If it was something like tracking breaking while the controllers are in full view of the cameras, then _that_ would really be an issue. Calling it an "issue" seems somewhat dishonest to me, it's more like a limitation instead of an issue. If a truck can't beat an F1 car in an F1 race, that's not an "issue", the truck can only do so much and it's not meant to race in F1. Just like the cameras on the G2, they're meant to work like that. I see their limitations but that's not an issue.

I don't really see the same issues with headset tracking that you do, haven't felt it be sluggish at all. Controller tracking honestly seems "good enough" for me. Yeah you can get it to freak out, but in normal usage it's fine. I didn't find the sweet spot and image clarity quite as impressive as other people have said, although it really hits you how sharp the headset is when you do things like trying to read text. Since I have a Vive and have the lighthouses, I might well get some Knuckles controllers. I'm mostly playing sims and it's pretty much fine though. Also, despite the weight being noticeably lighter on the G2, the Index was marginally more comfortable. It really depends on the game. In a sufficiently lit environment, it really didn't break immersion. I tried slow motion games, ones that used "behind the back/backpack gestures", and quick motion games that needed accuracy and responsiveness (e.g., "Beat Sabre"). The controllers worked fine in most every case, with only a few annoyances. The most notable one was that momentary "hop" when aiming down sights on two-handed weapons. Shifting the down-sight controller generally fixed the problem, but that's one I'd call immersion-breaking. :) Thanks for watching.

This VR headset is not sounding very good if the sweet spot and FOV is narrower than my Rift S I have. Plus others say here it is also blurry- probably talking about looking at the sides outside of the sweet spot. You didnt mention FPS yet in this video which in your future gameplay videos you may mention it when using your GTX-1070. I have the GTX-1080 so wondering how full Hi RES works with these type of GPU cards. Thanks for your video. I do not have this VR headset and watching reviews like yours to see what people think of this product. Getting mixed opinions right now in how well it is. I have mixed reality and steam VR software already installed cause I also have the Odyssey + which I didnt like cause of the narrow sweet spot and was hard to keep both eyes in focus while doing Racing games- so it sits in a box collecting dust. The Rift S is much better even thought the blacks are not the greatest. i am happy with my Rift S, but somewhat interested in the Hi RES and clarity of the G2. I only do SIM Racing games so controllers are a dont care. Question: that clip you talk about. it is just to hold the cable to the side of the headset for support. Why dont you use a "cable tie/Tie Wrap" like I do with my Rift S to clamp/support the VR cable to the side of the headset itself? Thanks again for your video.
@StellarContinuumGaming3 жыл бұрын
It's the clip the holds the cable to the top/back of the headband. FPS, like you mentioned, will be different based on your card and the title you're playing. I find the sweet spot fine and the FOV a touch narrower than I like. For simmers, racers, etc. (Especially ones that use external controllers instead of the included ones), it's beautiful. I do a lot of Elite Dangerous and can't wait to try FSX on it. MRTV has a lot of through the lens comparisons showing, specifically, racing titles. You do not need a 4K monitor to see 4K+ (2160x2160x2) in the G2. It's hooked up to a DisplayPort where it has its own device profile. Think of it like being another monitor. However, you will need a powerful video card to drive it at full resolution. If you're on a GTX-level card, configure it for half res. The only interplay with the monitor will be if you choose to mirror the G2's content onto it, then there will be downscaling before copy, most likely.

A very nice review, thank you :) I got my set yesterday and have had little time to play with it, but anyone have any experience with using it with 1080ti and what resolution I should have? (full or half) in Elite Dangerous with this card? Thank you :)
@StellarContinuumGaming3 жыл бұрын
In a huge Elite Dangerous fan too. I'd recommend 50% resolution. Hope you have fun! Thanks for watching.

I love mine. It's a big improvement over my previous Rifts S, withthe exception of the hand tracking which can be bad at times. Flying on DCS is now hugely immersive and I can wear it for hours

So is it worth it to upgrade from rift s?im more interested in the visuals i dont mind worse tracking as i dont play multiplayer

@Berkan Motuğan Ah, sorry. I looked at 0:51. That is "In Death". It's a rogue like VR title. I was playing it on Steam VR. There's a review of it on this channel if you're interested.

Can someone please make a wireless headset to compete with Oculus Quest. Wired headsets are just yesterday's tech. And those controllers are ridiculously large. Tracking issues like these with a 2020 headset are inexcusable.

HTC has a wireless adapter for the Vive and, I think, the Vive Pro. I have it myself and it works with lighthouse tracking. Sadly the HMD is finally giving up the ghost after four years of service...

Decagear does wireless PCVR. It will cost less than the G2 if it's ever released.

@@dtz1000 I am happy to pay extra if it can stream Steam games direct from my PC by wifi, doesn't have the tracking issues or the elephant feet handsets of the HP or the intrusive data mining locked-in control of Facebook.

It's exactly like CPU's. You need to be lucky. Some lens are good, other very bad ... You can test two and just have luck two times. And the price is absolutly too high for a very little difference with the quest 2.

The quality of this review is great! If I was just a simmer, I would absolutely buy the G2. But my son wants to use the headset for other gaming as well, so the controller tracking is not good enough.
@StellarContinuumGaming3 жыл бұрын
You're probably making a wise choice. WMR tracking isn't where it should be yet. Hope your son has fun with whichever one you choose! Thanks for the kind words. :)

@Travis Clark Thanks for the thoughtful words and the sub. I hope you have a blast when you settle on an HMD. :)

g2 is my first ever dive into VR world and i got to say: i'm impressed. Audio is superb, tracking is accurate (in HL-Alyx an least - most other games i play are flight sims). Visuals are also good, but that FOV is very slightly disappointing - we'll see if the mods will help here. Overall a great piece of hardware

Agreed. It's very solid. I linked to a video regarding the mod in the pinned comment. Have fun and congratulations!
