HPAT advice from medical students!

I asked my friends in 1st year of medicine in UCC what advice they have for students sitting the HPAT this year and this video features all of the tips they had!

I never did the hpat bez I knew I wasn’t going to do medicine in Ireland so I moved to Bulgaria and I’m now in 2nd yr of med.

Did you find that the real thing was any easier than the MedEntry exams? Also what kind of clock had you for timekeeping ? :)

Some Q’s were way easier and some were very confusing. In general they were all shorter in the real thing than Medentry’s ones.

Can one do the HPAT as a trial run in 5th year & having a repeat re-do in 6th year ?

Interesting idea, I haven’t heard it being done so actually don’t know but I feel like they wouldn’t let you. Also it costs like €150 to take so wouldn’t be cheap. And you have to do it in 6th year regardless, I do think it wouldn’t be allowed but look into it if you want

Hey, I am someone who wants to get into Medicine quite badly, but with the lack of knowledge about medicine,HPAT and without key strategies, I made a delayed start in practicing with medentry since December. However I see no improvement in my tests and I'm unsure how long I should study a day, and how to improve my scores for the HPAT. My aim is to get something above 180 but with my current scores I don't think it's feasible for me. Plus my mock exams are imminent and I am genuinely stressed about how to approach my HPAT exams. Would you have any suggestions or tips to tackle this issue??? Also do we need to know any scientific or mathematical information when we answer section 1 questions? Thank you

The knowledge you need is nothing beyond Jc maths standard as you can’t have a calculator, but a basic knowledge of statistics and probability can help sometimes. I’m not sure how to help to be honest, maybe just go over your approach to questions and make sure you are taking on board the advice from the medentry booklets. Hopefully it will work out for you🤞🏻

I’m the same, I did a decent amount last year and at the start of this school year but have done nothing for the last few months. The best we can do now is strategize and control things that we have control of. Trust your instincts and remember that the test was designed to be done with no preparation. Good luck brother

Did you find that you jumped largely in the real hpat from the percentiles you were getting doing med entry exams or did they give you a good indication of where you were at?

Not much to be honest what I got in the real thing was around what I had been getting, a bit higher than some and a bit lower than others

The online package is so comprehensive I don’t even know what else you would be looking into! I did the workshop too and it was good but basically a recap of what’s on the online platform so while it’s beneficial it’s not a necessity. I think you’ll be well prepared with what you have💛

This is a bit off topic, but I'm looking for a bit of advice on accommodation for UCC next year, as I'm hoping to do medicine there. If you dont mind me asking, when abouts did you start looking for accommodation? Is it still a bit too early? I was looking into Brookfield and it says its closed to 1st years so now I'm worried that I'm already too late or if it just hasn't opened yet... And of course, great video👍

Absolutely not, if you started soon you would actually be way ahead of the majority of people
