I missed out 4 yrs ago staying busy as a lowboy driver and I don't think I've seen a closer match to the real world daily used equipment, excellent work on your weathering details, you nailed it
@freedomring48135 жыл бұрын
I did one of these when I was about 14 then after I got out of the military , I was a heavy equipment operator in the Seabees, I got one of these and did it in camo and i built a full roll cage on it . I ran a public's work yellow Cat D9 in the Philippines when I was in the Seabees. It had a ripper and it leaked so much radiator liquid that we kept a water truck with us. It had a pony motor and it took all legs and hands to operate, unlike the dozers of today.

Built one of these back when they first came out. The glue gave up over time, now it's in a spare parts box with a AMT Autocar and a bunch of other stuff. Some day I'm gonna do a Mad Max kit bash.

I received this kit for Christmas this past year. I have been worried about missing parts due to the box not being sealed. This is a great kit. I'm a day into it now. They have more chrome on it now than in your build. I want no chrome. I can't get it all off. It appears all the trees are here but I'm missing the grill cover. I'm going to reach out to amt and see if I can order one. I can't just fab this up idt. You did a great build on this thing. I have built models of everything since 1980. This is definitely not a first time builders kit! This really is a nice kit! I'm excited to get it done and dirty!

About a year ago I built the AMT tri-axle low boy trailer and hooked it up to a Revell Peterbilt 359 tractor. Looks good. Then I spent forever trying to find any kind of construction equipment, in the same scale (1:25), to place on the trailer. No luck, then AMT comes out with this re-issue bulldozer and I jump on it like a duck on a June bug. I've just finished the dozer, less the blade and ripper, and placed it on the trailer to see how it looks...OMG! This thing is huge, in scale I mean. It dwarfs the trailer and the Pete...ugh! I ain't no expert but it just looks out of scale, and to my minds eye, that's very important.
@hpiguy6 жыл бұрын
It's pretty spot on to scale size. From a heavy equipment site, it's no baby dozer "they are 75,000 - 77,000 lbs with the blade and dims are 25'x12'8x13' " In 1/25th scale that makes it a foot long and half a foot wide, almost exactly what it measures on the kit.
@joshforresta6 жыл бұрын
I mean, it's a D8. It's not going to be as big as a D11, but its still up there. This isn't a small dozer. Just look at a picture of a new one, they're massive!

I had a chance to obtain the original dozer with low boy trailer back in the '70's! I built a pete day cab for the trailer. I went through some of my "forgotten" box's that I had in the basement and found a D-8 kit that is identical except the box say's Matchbox in the upper left corner-I wonder how many of those were put out?

@wrightflyer78556 жыл бұрын
Chris, you did an excellent job on this. I've built at least three of these through the years, the first being around 1975. It's a great kit and the only one of its kind. If anyone wants to build this and be a bit more accurate to the D8H, the front piece that covers the radiator should have round holes that can be drilled individually, but the supplied decal/sticker pattern is not true to the D8H so you may want to do some research. There are plenty of detail photos online, so it shouldn't be a problem. Bear in mind that Caterpillar paints each individual component yellow, assembles those components then paints them yellow again. So if you want to do a factory new machine the tracks should be yellow also. You'll have a lot of fun with this build and the finished model is large and impressive. Looks like I'll have to build another one.......
@hpiguy6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I'm sure they can't do certain things due to licensing issues with CAT. From what I hear they want a crazy amount of money to use their logos etc. The only way to re-release this kit and make it affordable to us common folks is to not associate it with CAT specific grill, logos, etc. And yes, that's why I did yellow paint on the tracks before I weathered them up. You can still see yellow on the sides of the tracks a bit.
@wrightflyer78556 жыл бұрын
Yep, licensing can be an expensive proposition. I remember building an AFV model a few years ago (don't remember which one) that had the brand CONTINENTAL deliberately misspelled to avoid the licensing fees. As for the D8H there is a set of aftermarket water slide decals available that duplicates the design of the old glossy peel 'n stick from AMT in the '70s and includes the Caterpillar logo. I think I'll go with a factory new machine like the one I saw at a CAT dealer in Pennsylvania in the mid '60s. But your weathering job is really good.......
@williambryant59465 жыл бұрын
Very nice. Lots of details that some people wouldn't even know to include like the fuel filter is glass so you'd see the fuel inside so you have painted it dark to represent this. Good job!

I built the original kit back in the mid '70's. At that time there was only one grill cover, and it contained the Caterpillar decals. Even back then, OSHA required a driver safety cage. I couldn't locate a Caterpillar paint which would have allowed me to scratch build the cage from Evergreen Plastic and painted it to match the rest of the 'dozer. Thanks for your tips: I intend to build the latest D-8 releas, add the safety cage, and weather it according to your information. I had two decades apart. The first molded in a bright, warm yellow. The second, however, AMT perversely cut corners, making it in a dull medium grey, requiring considerable spray painting out of a can; i was fortunate to have found something called caterpillar yellow. Even so, it was an unnecessary expense in paint (two large cans!) and time. I also wonder about wiring, hoses, tubing, etc., of the engine, drive train, chassis, blade controls, etc.
@randytaylor12582 жыл бұрын
Unpainted coloure plastic always looks waxy. Every part in this model needs to be painted and in the right coloi
@DavidRLentz2 жыл бұрын
@@randytaylor1258 , just me, but if the subject matter is white, and the kit is molded in white polystyrene, I am not painting it white. When all is done, though, I will apply a clear finish, gloss or flat, as appropriate. If it is a car model, I might ask Ralph Macchio to apply to it an interesting technique he had learnt in The Karate Kid movie. Well, the waxy finish you decry might save me the trouble.

You did a really good job in explaining what you wanted to accomplish but all the weathering seems a bit extreme for that year model. If you had an early 60's model it would be spot on because companies didn't take care of their equipment as well. Now days machines are usually steam cleaned from job to job. Plus if my mechanic let that kind of mess get by him, he'd get the pink slip, especially at the cost of the equipment. Then again it is just a model. Good work!
@hpiguy6 жыл бұрын
The D8H came out in 1958 and ended in 1974. Even at it's youngest it would be 44 years old. It's been around forever. I wanted this one to look used and abused and just about at the end of it's life. Sold off to a contractor that beat his equipment down until it died sort of thing.

Couple thoughts: the cleats should be filed to round off the tops more, with more wear on the front edges, but some rearward. Almost never see sharp corners on them. There are usually going to be shallow dents in the grille from large dirt clods or tree parts dropping behind the blade. There will typically be rents in the seat cushion and arm rests with stuffing coming out and evidence of paint touch-up, particularly noticeable around the decals, instruments and trim. Probably want to steel wool the hoses to give them a little experience, as well. No knocks, just some observations.

ive also made rust powder by putting steel wool in water and letting it sit for about a week. once it dries its literally a pile of rust dust that you can sprinkle and apply at will

That works too, but I am not that patient when I want rust for a build. ;) And I forget to plan in advance.

Thanks for this video. I finally was able to pick this one up. It was my fathers day present. Going to put it on a lowboy trailer. Now I need to figure out what semi is going to pull it. Thinking the kw 925.

Find a DM 800 Mack,I was in the Seabees many years ago and got to haul dozers and other equipment around with a DM 800 . The model is a great kit with nice tires ,of course that was back 30 years.

Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen. The oxygen bonds with the steel wool to forn the rust. No bad fumes.
