Well a pap smear swabs for HPV cells in the cervix, while the other hpv tests (such as at-home tests) swabs for HPV cells in the vaginal canal. The reason the vaginal swabs are more effective than the Pap smears is because if there ARE hpv cells present, they are going to be more concentrated in the vagina than the cervix. That being said, you don’t need both. You would just pick one because they’re testing for the same thing. So you get a more accurate reading this way, and it not painful compared to the traditional Pap smear. being said
