Cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer for women in Guatemala, the fourth most common worldwide. According to the WHO, over 340,000 people died from cervical cancer in 2020 - 90% of these deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Cervical cancer is causing too many early deaths and widening gaps in health equity. But there is hope - cervical cancer is largely preventable with the HPV vaccine, and early detection through regular screening saves lives.
In this poignant journey of loss and empowerment, a mother deeply affected by the prevalence of cervical cancer in Guatemala makes a conscious choice to protect her daughter.
At the Stanford Center for Health Education, we believe that expanding access to engaging education has the power to change behaviors, improve health, and save lives.
