You can trace the demise of the Australian made car from this eras adverts. All of those add on extras that were standard on a Datsun or Toyota. How many Australians died because of a fogged up windscreen. I remember driving to work in the winter, windows and vents open, freezing, while constantly wiping the windscreen with a cloth.

By the time the last Aussie car was built, heaters and demisters were a standard fitment for 46 years. Safety equipment like airbags and anti lock brakes had been fitted for years. I put it down to four things:- inferior build quality, not following market trends, low tarriffs and unionized workforce that was too expensive to employ. Low tarriffs and expensive production costs is a suicidal combination.

Hmmmm at 0:38 the voice over says "Look look closer again". The same line was used in one of the HQ adds. The one where they showed it under a waterfall. While I am on little things that you notice, the same "owner" was used for both the HQ and HJ Statesman commercials. I wonder why they didn't choose him for the WB Caprice commercial as well?

Build quality was good for the era. My VT is still running well after 26 years...newer cars don't offer much more except an outrageous price.(for SUV & tradie trucks mainly)

A shame they stooped so low as to sell Daewoo vehicles under the Holden brand. Consumers in the end could see the poor quality rubbish that was being produced. It was poor that consumers were paying a premium for a Holden and the reality was that they were getting a Daewoo complete with all the poor quality issues that they came with. At least the purchase price of a Daewoo branded car was relatively cheap. This is what ultimately lead to the demise of Holden.

Amazing nobody died during the making of the ads - some pretty dangerous driving there - and none of them would have been wearing seat belts back then either!
@beagle76223 жыл бұрын
My father started using seat belts. His HD had them & I think the HR had them. I am pretty sure he had belts iin the back by then. They used to call thes cars chuckable , handling definitely not their strength . That steering wheel could steer a small ship.

@@beagle7622 He was smart. I think most people only started using seatbelts when they became mandatory. I had an HR stationwagon in the late 70s that had mags (the previous owner put them on) so it probably handled a bit better, but cars back then in general were nothing like the ones we drive now.

Dad worked at GM Woodville and he bought a '66 "Special" no handling no brakes no radio no security with " flipper" windows no acceleration but not particularly economical either no synchro on first vinyl seats vinyl floor mats no fan on the heater. really a pathetic vehicle. Gearbox threw a bearing at 70,000miles and slid to a halt. A good looking body with no redeeming features

They were decent cars for the era...4 engine prop planes were no luxo either compared to a Boing 787 of today.

Holden & Ford failed mainly because the market had over 300 makes and models on offer in the end ..the market was so fragmented that even Toyota left in disappointment. So many fast food shops that no one could make a profit...so to speak
