Oh my goodness! What an intense and unbelievable performance this is. Andres Orozco-Estrada is on a different planet surely. And this orchestra has become one of the finest in the world over the last few years. I feel the urge to move to Frankfurt. Incredible musicianship.

I think this is Strauss' greatest tone poem. It is more metaphorical than some of the more explicitly literary works.

Glückwünsche an alle !

I have listened this masterpiece by R Strauss many times since I was a child, and I always considered that the best version was with Karajan, possibly due to the dynamics of the complete work, but I have also closely followed this great, great young Colombian director. The interpretations of almost all musical genres and of many of the composers of different styles and epochs are Incredibles such as Mahler and it could not be otherwise in R. Strauss, It is also incredible how this genius R. Straus could have written this masterpiece at the age of 25! , which would demonstrate that he is undoubtedly possibly the greatest orchestrator of his time a together with Mahler and Ravel. Without a doubt, it has great Wagnerian influence, the modulation in the final "coda" from C major to A flat major and with the harp arpeggios, is totally Wagnerian, and nobody could think that the final chord is the tonality of C major, the most simple chord, Many thanks to hr-Sinfonieorchester, another of the great German orchestras, for performing and have us remember such wonderful and extraordinary music. BRAVO!

Yes it is stunning that Strauss wrote this at the age of 25. He seems to have begun in late romanticism and then after World War 2 made his statement clear in Methamorphosen. What a journey!

Andres Orozco-Estrada is one of the great conductors of the music of Richard Strauss. I have always loved George Szell's recording of this piece with the Cleveland Orchestra. This performance is different from Szell's super-intense approach--it is more expansive, but just as good in it's own way. And what an orchestra this is--when the second chair oboe can take over the solo part and do a splendid job, you are looking at an ensemble with great players from top to bottom.

Your point is well taken but not just oboe. For whatever reason in this concert, (with one exception) concertmaster and principal player in all sections is the "second" listed solo player. All wind instruments have 2 "solo" players and some have an additional "acting solo" listed in orchestra personnel. This is truly a fine orchestra with a deep bench.

Chlorinda, I am hopeful you can help me understand how the orchestra lists the Konzertmeisters. Currently, I see Ulrich Edelmann listed first as "1. Konzertmeister" Alejandro Rutkauskas (who was Konzertmeister on this video) is listed next. Florin IIiescu is shown as "l. Konzertmeister koordiniert) and finally Maximilian Junghanns is "2. Konzertmeister." Do Ulrich and Alejandro have equal status? Or, is Ulrich first among equals? How does that work? Do Florin and Maximilian ever perform as Kozertmeister? Or, do they have other assigned work within the violin section? Just curious. No matter how they do it, this is a world class orchestra!@@chlorinda4479

@@chlorinda4479 I watch a lot of their videos as well, and you inspire me to ask a question I've had for a while, though it's about the orchestra members as a whole. I recognize many of the musicians by now, yet there are often a few faces I don't remember seeing before and never seem to see again. I assumed they were new members, but the website doesn't list them in the member bio section. Have you noticed this as well? Is it common for orchestras to bring in non-member musicians for a single concert?
