Wonderful performance. This location is perfect for this piece: Wagner himself imagined the Siena's cathedral as the Hall of the Grail... and I appreciate also the choice of cutting the (well deserved) applause. Thank you.

Although not performed in the usual theatrical setting, Wagner would certainly have enjoyed this place - in the Romanesque, pre-Gothic longhouse/nave of the basilica of Eberbach Abbey - and with this performance of Parsifal's prelude!

In terms of coherent dramatization and characterisation, Parsifal is a ludicrous mess. A train crash me in the operaeth of hapless puppets circling round issues of CAtholic peitism, Geril mythology, Buddhsitic surrender of the ego (the most respectable t So laughable in fact, that the chuckles that slip from ones cynical reaction are totally at odds with the spirit of genuflection one is being invited to adopt. Perhaps Wagner was conscious of this result, and intended a certain ironic and corrupted levity - more Alban Berg and Kurt Weill than Bayreuth, ehh? One can feel and witness the jerky leaps from one incident and subject matter to the next, as Wagner is patently trying to bend and forge the drama to fit her-his higher metaphysical and emotional, and essentially psycho-dramatic, perceptions. Nonetheless, on the basis of the opera's revelation and consecration of some of the most sublime and fundamental myths at work in our collective psyches, s/he - Doctor Wagner, the Magician of Bayreuth - is to be honoured with an eternal seat on Mount Olympus. Thus it is that this overture is pregnant (a very apt word) with the themes of: (1) the forces of eternal decay leading us into death; (2) the conflict between eternal decay and the sacred ritual of life's renewal (much as with the Freia and golden apples mythos), encapsulated i the ; (3) the perception that our womanly power to create life down the generations is the definitive answer to our individual mortality (this is the real point about Kundry and her magic). We need only mention a few important womanly figures in Wagner's lie - Christine Wilhelmine "Minna" Planer, Mathilde Wesendonck. Francesca Gaetana Cosima Liszt, etc, etc. - the list is admirably long; (4) the insight that the reabsorption of our mostly illusory ego perspective within the "great ocean" of our collective consciousness, is our unavoidable and in some ways most desirable destiny; (5) the parallels that are drawn between that oceanic domain permeating all our lives, and (a) the duty to maintain sacred rituals to fend off the corrupting darkness (very Judaic) , and (b) the need to understand the sense of the "Urwald", the primaeval forest, the feeling of elemental power, the insight that one is dealing with something profound, sensuous and utterly engulfing. Again, Kundry (the pagan witch from the forest) is the emblem of this scarvely disguised Freudian-Jungian elemental eroticsm. (6) the employment of the figure or token or symbol of the holy and innocent fool (another Seigfried), as the focal point for the revelation, enlightenment and epiphany the occurs on grasping these deep truths. In a sense, it might be argues Wagner in Parsifal reached the boundaries of his own doctrine of the total work of art, where singing, acting, drama, stage craft and music are blended with incredible expressiveness. His symphonic genius was wrestling with emotional depts and complexities, and with transcendental truths and hyper-symbolic ideas, that even he could not write characters and drama to match. Or perhaps the opera is just a mess of unfinished dramatic sketches, which if WAgner had lived another 10 years, he might well have radically revised. Love, andrea

Why does modern conductors wear those horrible jackets as if they were Mat Tse Tung? Why do they have decided to dress different from other members of the orchestra?
@PaulHerbert19564 жыл бұрын
His jacket is quite tasteful. I saw Andris Nelsons conducting the Vienna Philharmonic on New Year's Day wearing what looked like a purple velvet tent. I would love to see tuxedoes done away with and come up with an alternative clothing option that is easy for men to get into and comfortable to wear. Many choirs are doing away with tuxedoes and black gowns.
