The fugue beginning at 1:20:09 must be one of the most surprising, and yet beautiful moments in the piece. It's an incredible subject, and developed pretty aggressively, with stretti almost immediately after the four-part statement. It's a beautiful moment, and climactic in just the right way before the quiet ending. It must stand alongside Liszt's Dante Symphony as one of the best integrations of fugue in a Romantic orchestral work.

Apaixonei-me na hora.

This orchestra is outstanding, I am so grateful for the many performances they are making available. This is a rather "operatic" reading, but then, that is the nature of Verdi's version of the Requiem. The fact that Ms. Urmana takes the mezzo-sopran instead the soprano is baffling to me. I know sometimes she takes a role of a lower voice in operas but I've heard her with Bychkov performing this piece and it was sublime. Her voice has a smoother tone, better breathing control, she doesn't struggle during the long phrases and her "perdendosi lift" to pianissimo at 01:19:38 is the most ethereal. Not heard since the great Caballe. Her voice has got heft to it and of course, her final high C at the climax Libera Me explodes like a nuclear bomb. As I was listening to this, I was like "Urmana is literally right there! Let her sing it."

Like other well-known mezzos (Verrett, Bumbry, Horne, Ludwig), who have made forays into soprano realms with varying degrees of success, VE was obviously miscast as Aida (Met broadcast), but, later, superb as Amneris. I'm going on a classical listening journey, listening to the '100 Greatest Classical Works' list, and Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem sits comfortably at Number 52 out of 100. I wondered why Verdi's Requiem was so high on the list as I began listening to the haunting Kyrie, but then the moment the Dies irae hit, I knew EXACTLY why this beat so many pieces on the list. I've heard this piece everywhere, in commercials, movies, and just about anything to which you can attach music. It's highly dramatic, action packed, and so grief-stricken. Verdi was a talent.
