This symphony has haunted me since I first heard it as a child. Those first three notes still give me a chill. It is remarkable how French composers can take a simple, almost banal, tune and turn it into something irresistible in its joy and dramatic power. Poulenc did this too.

It's lovely to see this major masterpiece played by the orchestra, with great camera work too. It's absolutely brilliant, for example, there's a beautiful moment in the 1st movement, when the oboe picks up a motif from the clarinet. And also, the moments when the harp and the English horn get to be at the forefront of the orchestra, it's so thoughtful and gives even more colour to the piece. The cyclical element is fantastic, the final duel between the subjects is another moment to savour.

Cesar Franck was somewhat of a musical oddity during his long career. The quality of his work was deemed by musicologists to be uneven, which led to poor reviews, few performances, and an overall lack of appreciation by academia. While I don't think every criticism of his music can be argued away, this symphonic work shows that Franck developed a unique and powerful voice in the halls of serious music. We are fortunate to have this performed in a modern orchestra. Thank you for uploading it.

Absolute nonsense. Total bs. Franck was a great master, as great as any other. Do you even know what you're talking about? Have you heard every one of his organ masterworks? The piano works? The great piano quintet? The sonata for piano and violin? Sorry if he doesn't live up to your liking. Great composers don't need the likes of people and critics with opinions. You could say that silly crap about any great composer. There can be no greater composer than Franck. He is unique and original. It doesn't make him a lesser composer. Or an uneven one.
@djmotise
@djmotise 2 жыл бұрын
And who are these precious "musicologists" who have thus "deemed" him this or that? I've never heard anything more offensive. And just dumb.
@pamos1949
@pamos1949 2 жыл бұрын
@@djmotise Never heard anything more offensive?? Do you ever leave the house? Watch television? Anyhoo, much as I hate to tell you this, Mr. Brandal is quite right. His use of the word musicologist is off the mark, but many of Franck's works met with little or no success in his lifetime. His students had a particular affection for him, but he was somewhat beleaguered by other composers and many conservatoire colleagues. For one thing, they did not like his cyclic structures. Also, he was deemed overly dramatic in some works. To boot, he was a very popular teacher who used somewhat unorthodox methods in a very orthodox institution. Mr. Motise pushes at the point himself by listing the usual suspects among his output -- of course, the quintet, sonata, symphony, prelude/chorale/fugue, symphonic variations are great, and I do not consider that means there are not other worthies in his opera. I think of Les Djinns, for example. I am, indeed, of the opinion that he is still underrated. The issue here is rather odd, because Mr. Brandal seems to write as an admirer of Franck. What he takes note of is CF's reception in his own time, and I daresay even Wiki makes its tepid reception clear. But, Mr. Motise, do you really think that Franck was as great as Bach? Beethoven?

A marvel of superb architecture and splendid beauty, I consider the Franck Symphony an inspired masterpiece, but sadly, one that is capable of being despised as well as admired, whose vital, irresistible dramatic flow within great contrasts of emotion have been regarded as only empty bombast. It possesses a simplicity, yet also a deep religious fervor that can stir the spirit, and this performance, for me, does just that.

Has anyone noticed what appears to be a homage measure at 3:09-15 and more robustly at 13:27-37 in the first movement closely matched to a theme of Brahm's in the first movement of his 3rd Symphony? This theme occurs at 3:25 in Andrés Orozco-Estrada performance of Brahm's before being repeated with variations throughout. It's not exact, mind you, but very very close. Coincidence?

I would think so, although I wasn't able to find the French premiere date of Brahms' symphony. But he wasn't initially regarded particularly highly there, and people tend to forget just how separate the French and German musical worlds were for most of the 19th century (despite the influence of Wagner).

A favorite of mine. When a kid, I read the motto theme is a parody of Liszt's intro-theme in Les Preludes, which is in it of itself a parody of Beethoven. I think one of B's string quartets, but I don't remember exact details now. Spirited performance.

As a fan and collector of classical music I have always praised French classical music particularly this great symphony by Franck that excels in melody, subject development, orchestration and integrity far beyond any Germanic symphony composed by their famous composers. This trend continued well into the 20th century only to be bested by Russian and other Slavic composers, of course.

If one emphasizes the woodwinds more, then the effect is proto-Messiaen holy birds. This then further allows the goal of the symphony to be the near stasis at the softest moment of the final movement, instead of the final fortissimo. It's also a good way to keep the piece from being so easily boring. It avoids the Langweiligheit when it has an actual specific musical goal.
