I can't believe I underestimated Sibelius. I listened to his Symphony 5 live, and it was an imminent love-now I can't stop listening to all of his symphonies. There is something special about him; he puts so much into his symphonies: emotion, precision, majestic style, grandeur, but also uncontrollable passion. His roots to the romantic style are evident but also evolved from the classic romanticism. A true gem.

The slow movement is insanely beautiful. In general, I love the way Sibelius connects the most simple and basic building blocks to a totally unique and original orchestral and musical texture. Not only do these orchestral effects seem totally natural and without any sort of forced virtuosity, they just blend amazingly well and are doing nothing but serving the purpose of molding these rich musical images into a transparent and coherent form. This is definitely also true for this symphony.

Jaime Martin can cast an occasional ungainliness at the podium, yet his precision and clarity of direction are always welcome. This is one of my favourite Sibelius symphonies, and he has produced a knockout interpretation, especially the rather expansive treatment of the second movement. This is rapidly becoming one of my favourite orchestras as, under a variety of top class conductors, they pull out beautiful performances with astounding regularity.

On the strength of this performance, I'd say that Jaime Martin is a great Sibelius interpreter; I'd like to hear him conduct the other six symphonies! The Third, to me, has in it the spirit of Finland and the flow of life, and I've never heard it done with so much of that feeling as here. The second movement in especial is taken too glibly by some conductors; here it carries a much deeper significance. The orchestral balance too is excellent, allowing the parts to be heard more comprehensibly than I had recalled hearing before.

In my opinion this is the best performance of 3rd symphony alongside a radio concert of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra , under the batton of Vladimir Ashkenazy, that I heard in the 2000s, catching the hopeful and comforting essence of this work. The impressive colors and lyrical characteristics are rich and vivid and the balance between parts perfect. The rrytmical treatment, especially the use of timpanum e.g. in the climaxes of the 2nd and 3rd part, is excellent and bivotal to the dynamics of the work, that is complex and modern in its texture although the overall impreession is transparent and clear. Jaime Martin has clearly scrutinized the score with. great Sibelian intuition. The first movement brought to my mind new associations to the romantic tone poems of the composer, especially the less known melodrama, The Wood Nymph. The 2nd movement is difficult to shape but here it is conceived beautifully, with depth. The finale is. definitely the crown for this performance. In all parts Martin pays skillfully attention to unresolved sonorities. as a counterpoint to the dreamy and aphoristical material, that has a lot of warmth in it. There are other well-balanced interpretations, like those of Gergijev and Janssons, but the Frankfurt rendition has more detail and the elan vital, that the work has, is accompanied by an experience of uplifting duration. The interpretation affirms amd amplifies the. belief and strength in life. The Lahti Symphony Orchestra ’s account of this work with Osmo Vänskä (from the 1990s) has perhaps the most beautiful. interpretation of the second movement and their version of the first movement is. also. very dramatical, the folk influences giving contrast to the dreamy and aphoristical sections. The Frankfurt version pays more attention to the classical form. bringing forth the different historical layers of tradition with which Sibelius plays. I had to listen this video twice in row and even my six-year-old child liked the second movement very much.

This symphony is often underestimated, including by me! This was a fine performance that brought out many new insights; splendid orchestral playing and fine work by this not particularly well-known conductor. It's a deceptively difficult symphony to bring off, particularly the finale where the sense of overall direction can be elusive. Congratulations to the musicians and the conductor who have given such a passionate and vigorous performance. I agree with Ronald Woodall that the 2nd movement was a revelation. This can seem rather a lame duck between the glories of the first and last. It sometimes feels like a rather limp little melody subjected to meandering variations. The 3rd is considered to be Sibelius' neo-classical, i.e., backward looking symphony. After the success of his first two symphonies, the 3rd was like a pit stop/charging station preparing for the innovations of his 4th-7th symphonies that successfully completed his transition from a 19th century romantic composer into a 20th century modern one. Herbert Von Karajan, a great champion of Sibelius' symphonies 4-7, appears to have pretty much ignored the 3rd. But I think that any of Sibelius' music is top-notch.

Brillante e vigorosa interpretazione. Direi eccellente esecuzione sostenuta da un orchestra che non trovo aggettivi adeguati per definirla come meriterebbe.
