👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Champagne 🌹🌹🥂🌹🌹😉🙏🏻

This is obviously the original 1947 version made for the Paris Opera ballet as Palais du Cristal. Balanchine was always changing his works so later on when technique had developed to be more advanced he changed the choreography. Current Paris Opera dancers have moved with the times, although the French “style” still is there. So don’t beat up these dancers. They are performing true to that era.

I'm not sure Symphony in C is more technically challenging than Le Palais. On the contrary...it seems to me that the latter reworking actually eliminates some difficult technical passages in favor of simpler ones, like the fouettes on LPDC 1st Mvt, gone in SIC.

From what I've read, some of the spectacular balances and extensions in the 2nd Movement in the original version of this ballet were created by Balanchine because Toumanova was the principal ballerina, and she could handle them. I don't see those moves in this videotaped version, so I don't think it is as close to the "original" as people think. The version currently danced by New York City Ballet, while somewhat different from the first version, is perhaps closer to the original than this videotaped version.

The men at the Paris Opera are always so much better on stage than the women. When you watch videos of them in class, they are all impressive. For some reason, that ability for the women does not translate on stage, in my view. I have always thought that. Not just in this piece. Bottom line, the Russians perform Balanchine the best - even way better than NYSB dancers, who always, these days, look jerky, tight, anxious, sloppy - grimaces and all. I believe it is because Russian dancers are trained superbly in both technique and lyricism, which allow Balanchine's fast moves to be done with more ease and beautiful fluidity. I think if Balanchine had lived to see the collapse of the Iron Curtain and the impeccable Russian dancers, he would have died and gone to heaven right then and there. His grounding was, afterall, at the Vaganova Academy and Mariinsky Theatre, his alma maters. His Western quest was their look. Having said that, I love these original crystal colored costumes - so beautiful coming together in the coda - and greatly appreciate the holistic filming of the whole stage to bring out Balanchine's patterns and lines, which these French dancers maintained beautifully -- all Balanchine's busy, flying legs and arms. You can tell, I am not a Balanchine fan, but I do appreciate the difficulty of this original choreography and its later variants. Symphony in C / Crystal Palace - perfect example of Balanchine's reputation of blending music and dance so perfectly into one.

The Russians do not perform Balanchine the best . That’s a false statement. Some Balanchine’s ballets , Russian dancers can cope and look pretty . They tend to slow down the tempo to show off their beautiful lines, they do a lot of posing , going from one move to another , milking each movement rather than just speed thru them like how Balanchine’s choreography intended .

the bolshoi can do his pieces very very well. different companies can seem to do certain ballets better than others; it all just depends on the national style and training methods. there are some balanchine ballets that do look better on nycb because they explot the quirky way americans used to do ballet.

Apparently someone was listening because the audio has been fixed. I opened it on my TV two days ago and the sound was adjustable. I can hear it perfectly now. This is one of my favorite Balanchine ballets, especially the second movement, so dreamy and beautiful. I love this ballet. I played the NYC Ballet version. The two are so different, almost as if created by different choreographers. Balancing did create it for Paris Ballet, so, perhaps, their version is closer to his intention? BTW, NYC Ballet is always so dowdy looking: sets and costumes. Are they the poor sister?

NYCB's version was created by Balanchine after he did this version for the Paris Opera and has different choreography and costumes and is in my eyes superior. But you can pick your favourite, they're both by Balanchine!
@bobloblaw9679

it was originally choreographed for the paris opera ballet. these colors are representative of the original costumes. POB has kept this original version. you can tell it is the 'proto' version. when balanchine set the ballet on his new york city ballet in the late 1940s they didn't have so many well-trained dancers yet so some of the dancers had to dance in multiple sections, so they made the costumes white. he also just had a thing (maybe from art deco?) about streamlining things. he liked things sleeker, so reduced scenery and costumes in general.

I dont understand why they chose to change Balanchine's choreo???? It was different for a reason, its Balanchine style. iIguess they got permission from the trust to change portions. Unfortunately this is how Balanchines works will be watered down. This is a beautiful production, the costumes are gorgeous. Dancers are wonderful, very french. But Balanchine never had foutes in this piece.

he altered his own choreography all of the time to suit what dancers he had and his evolving vision. this is the original choreography that he set on the paris opera--they just never updated to what the 'normal' choreography is. that is why it is called 'palais de cristal' (its original title) and not 'symphony in c' (its later title).
