HS1177 FPV Camera Setup

How to setup the HS1177 FPV camera from Sony or Foxeer. Tuning cable alteration, camera focus and ideal settings for outdoor FPV use. The camera in this video is the Foxeer version (XAT600M IR Block) but the same principles apply to the Sony version.
I have found these settings provide improved colour saturation in outdoor conditions and the camera transitions better between shade and full daylight, as well as working better in low light conditions around dawn and dusk.
Make sure you have a sunny day to do the "AWC - Set" process.
I'm not a camera expert by any means - I just came across some commonly used settings and made some minor personal tweaks.

Hello, I just purchased 1 of these cameras and the bloody thing came with no instructions and the on screen display was in Chinese so as you can imagine I had no bloody chance but now I have watched your video I know where the language selection is and what the settings are for so a big thank you. You can use a fatshark battery to power the camera. Has the right connector for the eu cable. Thanks for the video!

Will try these settings out. If you go into the special menu you can add a camera name that is always displayed on the osd. I've set mine to "puddles" as that's my nickname lol. It makes it more convenient for races to make sure your own the correct Chanel and make sure your looking at your video feed

Do you have some sample DVR footage outdoors in both light and dark conditions (preferably dynamic) to see how it looks in flight?

I actually have a second battery for my FatShark goggles which have the same power supply connector as the cable. What does the AWC - Set process do for you? I always just set the DWDR on and set the contrast down and seems to be fine for me.

Yes, the Fatshark batteries have the right power connector. The AWC Set is very important in my opinion, it sets the colour temperature accurately for outdoor use. It probably makes indoor use worse but make sure you do it in direct sunlight on a very white surface.

I'm trying to hook up to my Panasonic Viera vt50 tv with an RCA cable just like you show here and all I get is black and white. The RCA connection on the back of the tv is shared through composite as there is no separate true RCA connection. Could that be the problem? What tv do you have that you hook up to?

I don't think it will work through composite input. TV needs the yellow video input - often alongside the red and white audio inputs

Perhaps there are variations in production. It is critical to get the white balance done properly using a bright white target in direct sunlight. I've done it in the shade and ended up with orange or purple hue to the picture.

is there a correct distance to set the camera from the focus chart to get the right focus ?

At least 5-6 feet should be sufficient. And perhaps less than 10-12 feet since it's a wide angle lens and the target image would be too small any further away.

awesome guide. BTW, your picture quality is very high. Mine isn't too far from a CMOS camera. And that's on all HS1177 camera ordered from different locations. Hmm.... =\ Could be that because of sunny day you had at that moment?

+Alexandru Covaliov I've seen slight differences between some batches and versions of the HS1177 but nothing that really concerned me. The best FPV camera for 'out of the box' image quality I've come across is the 1000TVL CMOS camera that ships with the Eachine Racer 250, but it is very susceptible to jello effect in a dynamic environment (flying) and would probably have a small latency as well.

It's readily available at newsagents and office supply stores in Australia but I'm not sure about other countries. It's a Bostik product called Blu-tack. Sort of a cross between plasticine and chewing gum. It's typically used for hanging posters on the wall.

Here's a way to modify the programming cable to hook up directly to your camera in the quad and make changes in the field. It works perfectly! And let's you make the changes on the screen that really matters, not your TV. Best mod I've seen yet! It's on RCGroups www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2473157&page=685

It's a good idea, I've seen it used by people that fly regularly in daytime and nighttime - so they can adjust settings in the field to suit the two very different conditions. As I mention in the video I am not making adjustments for it to look good on the TV - I know what settings work for me and the TV is an easier way of making the adjustments before I even install the camera during the build.

I hear they are going to dc the hs1177 and come out with something new, will be interesting to see what the programmer looks like. At 1:12 you show the power connector which I know has to be a male barrel connector of the 1.25mm size. Where the hell did you get one from? Google brings up nothing. I guess you could cut off the barrel and expose the 2 wires for a mod. 2.1 barrel seems to be a more standard size, why don't the Chinese use standard stuff
