I’ve had a utility room and garage built about 2 years ago and for the last few weeks when the rain is hitting the wall directly so much water leaks in it’s running right down the wall on the inside. Done the same thing to mine and not had any water come in the last few times so looking good. Thanks for the vid mate 👍

Thomas, thanks very much for the comment and sharing your experience. As I say we are not professionals so it was just a bit of DIY but it worked for us. Lead flashing can be troublesome. It can hold tight for years and then suddenly a bit of pointing drops out and it's drip drip but often only in heavy rain so can be hard to pin down the leak. Sometimes you can't see anything wrong at all but nothing short of ripping it all off and starting again will fix it. Cheers

Hi David that's a classic example of my DIY videos, 10 minutes to film ad hoc on my phone gets 20,000 views. When I spend 4 days making a detailed workshop video testing my skills to the limit it gets 500. Life is a beach 🤣 Cheers

Nice video. Learnt a bit. Researched what lead mate an wedges are and learnt even more.

Hi Alan, I'm glad it was useful. It was just a 'spur of the moment' vid as I pulled my phone out of my pocket but I hoped it would help people maybe. A few 'experts' have said it's an amateur hack but honestly it worked - probably good enough for 10 years at least. It gets more views when it rains😁 Thanks for watching. Cheers

After your video discovered hall clips ( spring wedges). Seem a good idea.

Nice to watch your video , I m at the point of having a go myself with some lead flashing on a chimney on a bungalow which has a small leak. I ve called endless people and can’t believe no body can fix it and each time they charge and take money and don’t seem interested in reappearing. I dont believe it can’t be that complicated to do the job and I,m a bit tired of getting ripped off.after watching your video I’m thinking of just getting up there and having a go myself, thanks

Hi mohanlalmistry, these things can be tricky find. Trades people have limited time; they need money coming in at a fixed rate to pay their mortgages. Coming back for a 2nd/3rd/4th visit under 'warranty' is money lost. I've just spent days looking for a leak on a small flat lead roof - I think I've found it now but it was a gap in some flashing some distance away from where the water was coming in. It needed a lot of rain and wind in a certain direction to show. Also, my daughter bought a house about a year ago and quickly found a leak coming into a bedroom. It looked like a problem with the valley on a cross-gable roof. She had that done at some considerable expense and it still leaked. The roofer has been back twice and adjusted the gutter fall, and also re-seated a tile that looked like the cause. Both return visits for free. And they have still not found it. And further, I had water coming into a porch roof usually a couple of times a year but some years nothing. I resealed the flashing several times - in the finish a builder fitted new lead, but cut it in about 3 inches into the stonework and it no longer leaks. Sometimes it takes somebody resident on-site with patience to do the detective work. Cheers

Thanks for your reply , very good of you to take time to respond . I definitely know this is not solvable and I,m going to keep going with the knowledge and understanding I,ve gained and will either have a good go myself or try to look for somebody who’s already paid their mortgage off 😀 cheers @@HaxbyShed

Thanks for this, interesting. Found it while looking for advice on finding a flashing leak. Our sunroom roof has a leak in heavy rain, usually when wind is blowing from a certain direction. Water is getting behind the plaster in the room below, has to be getting behind the flashing. Interesting too that the negative commentators have no help videos of their own! lol Thanks again

HI Den, thanks for watching. I always start my DIY videos by saying "I don't know anything about anything" because genuinely I am self-trained by trial and error and not a tradesman. But over the years I've tackled many domestic jobs and I can fix most, most of the time. If they give trouble later then I put in warranty call to myself and I fix it (again) 😁 Saved me a fortune over the years. Cheers

Excellent work forget the haters, at the least they could tell you what the right way would have been. 👍 from me.

Hi MrN1sar, if ever I am doing a vid on a job like this I make a long introduction saying "I'm not a roofer, I'm not a builder, it's just DIY - use it if it's useful". I still get a few people saying it's rubbish but mostly people understand I'm not claiming any expertise (and it still does not leak). Cheers.

This was not useful. What is lead mate, whet are lead wedges, how do you apply it?
@HaxbyShed2 жыл бұрын
Hi David, Leadmate is a tradename for lead sheet sealant. There are other names. Wedges are made by cutting a strip off your lead and then making it into a roll so it can be wedged in between the flashing and the mortar course. It just hammers in to the gap to wedge the lead flashing in place. It was just a DIY repair - we don't claim any particular expertise or skill. I hope that helps.

Well maybe yes, as we say on the vid we are not experts. It's more a diary of what we do rather than instruction to anyone. But I don't think it will leak like it was.

@@HaxbyShed I've got a small tear hole in my lead flashing can I use some sort of sealant for an easy fix?
@HaxbyShed3 жыл бұрын
@@chatteyj Well let me say first that I am not a roofing professional just a DIY guy, but what I've done in that situation is to use Wickes "all weather polymer sealant". I've found it sticks ok to the lead and I've even stuck a small lead patch on with it. It won't last forever but it should last a few years. I hope that helps.
