That's the thing when people talk about costs of these kinds of projects. The money doesn't just disappear, it's paid to businesses providing a service.

Keep these videos coming, clear concise and so informative. Just look at the nationwide benefits coming form this project, jobs, and long term ones too created as well and extra rail capacity to relieve the WCML which as you mention is already one of the busiest in Europe.

In Tunbridge Wells Kent when they knock down the old Kent & Sussex Hospital all the steel went for recycling and believe or not it was a big lorry load very day and just maybe some of that steel is now part of HS2

Recycling steel is great, and it's good to do it as much as possible, but that's all Electric Arc Furnaces can do. They can't reach the temperatures required to make new steel from raw materials.

If were gonna have a new high speed rail called high speed 2 who will be the rail operators running HS2.
@jermainetrainallen6416 Жыл бұрын
It will be whoever is running the West Coast Partnership when HS2 opens. Currently, it's run by Avanti West Coast but that may change by the time Phase One opens

Agree - while the process of steel recycling is very interesting, all this green crap against cars and nonsense around net-zero (whatever that is) could be substituted with more detailed analysis on how they ensure that the recycled steel is free from any contaminants. For example, I say a trolley in the scrapyard with rubber wheels - those along with much other extraneous material would have to be separated and the remaining steel that is suitable for reproduction cleaned - none of that was shown. I actually watched this video to see that.

Haha .. what complete & utter nonsense - its anything BUT "low carbon" as HS2 Ltd themselves have stated & very little of the track will be "high speed" due to severe financial problems. The ballast to support high speed trains is literally too expensive therefore, "normal" ballast will be used on all but a short section of track & the trains will be lucky to travel much faster than inter City 125's. It's an environmental disaster of epic proportions & Britain's biggest infrastructure mistake in half a century & anyone with half a brain knows that "pausing" the B'Ham to Crewe line & Euston station for 2 years is just another way of saying "cancelling". Only 2 weeks ago, the first 2 phases were given a red rating & deemed "unachievable" by the government's own Infrastructure & Projects Authority .. a complete waste of money.

I suppose you would rather the steel was imported from China, where it is made from freshly mined iron ore etc and the power to smelt it is generated from coal. Is it not good that there is an element of 'circularity' in the building of HS2 ?. is that not a positive ?

that woman that was waffling on in the control room, the one doing rhe corporate speech.... she said low carbon steel 🤔 wont that be soft as shit? surely you want a high carbon steel, one with high tensile strength and hardness- low carbon steel would be rubbish for building big stuff.
@adea7480 Жыл бұрын
she meant embodied carbon.
@josschroeder Жыл бұрын
Clearly she is referring to embodied carbon. Besides mild steel - standard structural grades - has pretty low % carbon anyway. Otherwise you end up with pig iron or wrought iron which is brittle and not very useful.
