He could go through the motion with the second and third set and lose the match and still qualify for the semi final but he reckon it would be a discredit to the sport and there is no guarantee that he can perform well in the SF. I think he did the honorable thing by withdrawing.

Dahlah Steen ini emang makin kesini makin ga profesional komentarnya, terlalu banyak personal statement yang subjektif. LZJ main simply bagus dan profesional aja sih, ga pake ngoyo di match ini dan ketika ankle nya twisted pun dia ada di gerakan yang normal. Like bener bener normal regular move bukan karena dia break dance di tengah lapangan karena pengen push it too far. Aneh banget Steen.

Exactly. It is just normal attitude in sport and I believe if LZJ played it easy, he would easily commented: ‘I don’t know why he played lazy like that, maybe because he already knew that he qualified. It makes the game a bit boring and I don’t think it is the right attitude in sport.’

LZJ could just stand there at the court, loose the match and still advance to semifinal. While retiring from the match means withdrawing from tournament. Not sure if his coach brief him on these options during the medical treatment break.

He won the first game and was so far ahead in the second. He would have had to just stand still and let lsf serve almost 40 times and it would have all likely been for him to just withdraw tomorrow. He likely didn’t think it was safe or worth it.

He has good sportsmanship I guess. If he just stands and lose the match it'd be disrespectful towards Shi Feng. If he withdraw from tournament would also be disrespectful towards his next opponent. And it's also his last tournament with his coach, he stated he wanted to give his best as a farewell gift. They probably have a target that they mutually wanted to achieve which is why this is more devastating for both of them. He probably chose to retire cause he knows his body best, he just recovered from a nasty ankle injury too.
