HSE: The Trolls

This time, we take a look at the Trolls, and in particular the ways some of them shape the very foundations of the Beta kids’ session, as well as the kids’ early lives. As such we mainly talk about Karkat, Gamzee, Vriska, Terezi, and Tavros in this video--but don’t worry, we’ll get to the the rest of the trolls soon enough!

So has anyone else noticed how smart the girls in Homestuck are? While movie/TV scriptwriters are writing wallflowers Hussie keeps providing manipulative, scheming dogs who are constantly poking at the edges of reality Light is the aspect most closely linked with intelligence. With the lone exception of zebede every single light aspect so far has been a girl. Rose, Vriska, Aranea, Joey, and Konyyl are all light aspect and not very different from each other

I think it's a bit misleading to say that Gamzee's influence was the cause of Jack Noir's rebellion. We've seen Jack take action against the Black Queen in half of the Jacks shown in the story. Operation Regisurp happened because Jack recognized that BQ had made herself vulnerable. And in the other two cases, we see Jack rebelling not against the Dersite royalty, but against the "rules" of the Purple & Gold Cold War that exists in the Medium prior to player entry, by murdering unawakened dream selves. One of those cases was because of the BQ being replaced by an outside influence, but the other was simply because he'd been bribed with scottie dog candies. It seems to be Jack's base role in SBURB to be a power hungry rules breaker; all that Gamzee's actions did was define the form of that rebellion.

Terezi (along with Sollux) were also the reason why the kids and the trolls were even able to communicate in the first place, through having Dave wire her a bunch of boonies. It's a paradox, so Dave is just as complicit in the chain, but it feels important enough to be worth a mention. Love your videos, hope you have a great day!

Homestuck just has this narrative that puts a lot of weight in to pretty much all of the characters actions and motives that make their struggle feel so real and overtly complicated. Anyways, thank you optimistic duelist for this wonderful video for my weekly dose of homestuck fan indulgence.

I'm curious if anyone can answer my questions. 1) Do you have to beat your denizen or can you just do the *Choice* to get the grist hoard 2) How does the DNA for first guardians work, never fully understand 3) Can multiple sessions from the same planet win? 4) If one session scratches does it messes up all the other sessions? 5) Is it possible for a beta session to win the game or are they destined to scratch? I can't find decisive answers, so I'm curious what others think.

1. You don't have to beat your denizen, as long as you agree to their terms. 5. There's nothing saying that a beta session can't win

Cathie Upchurch 1) an important part of The Choice is that it normally isnt a choice at all, since the denizens will know what youre going to choose. as far as i understand it, all denizens will offer a different Choice to each player and if they refuse, they will fight to the death. 2) the genetic code for each first guardian is stored in the subconscious of one of the players (beta session was rose, alpha session was jake). this code is ectobiologically combined with different objects that determine the intelligence of the guardian itself (a dog for bec vs an omniscient cueball and lil cal for scratch).

Cathie Upchurch 3) i’m not sure about this one, but i don’t see a reason why not, provided each session’s players have stable ectobiology loops. the reason we focus on the beta kids is because they’re directly responsible for the failure of the troll session. they are also the main characters of homestuck, so go figure. 4) no, each session from one planet is separate and has its own incipisphere. 5) “beta” is just the name slapped onto the B1 version of sburb, it doesn’t have any ramifications for the session itself.

All I can say is this : THANKS TROLLS YA REALLY GOOFED Also, did anyone else realise that the Highbloods did most of the killing? Like, Eridan, Vriska, and Gamzee? Even Terezi and Kanaya could be counted as they aren't low bloods, they could be considered middle bloods. But the low bloods actually didn't start killing people, besides merely defending themselves. (Besides Aradia, but she's a special case what with having become a robot made with the intentions and "biology" of a high blood. )

Only one note: Jack's hatred of the queen does not seem to stem from clowns, but from the prototyping process in general. Regardless of the specific prototyping, Jack always develops a vendetta against the queen in every session.

And the Chumhandle John changes to, EB, is on the surface a reference to EarthBound as another commenter on this video pointed out, but it could also reference Ethidium Bromide, a fluorescent dye used in genetic sequencing that also has mutagenic properties.
