Having worked at HTC from 2010 to 2013 doing go to market (GTM)marketing, I would agree with you on a lot of these things, especially on management. HTC management was so f××ked up, undermining how great the product was. I launched about 20 phones for HTC at the time, mainly for the t-mobile account, from the HTC Sensation 4G (fun fact, Peter Chou wanted to call the phone the Passion 4G, I sort of overrode him on that awful name), a bunch of mytouch devices, the Wildfire S, the HTC ONE S and X and the Amaze 4G (sad to see it was mentioned in the video as one of the phones with poor naming convention). I left for Samsung and helped launch the GS4 and Note3 in the US. While the company operations was much more professional, but I definitely felt more like a cog in a machine than the control I had at HTC.

The MBA mentality kills companies. You need engineers with business sense running companies. If you look at the companies that continuously provide growth and competitive edge, those companies have corporate boards full of engineers and highly value their engineering teams. When Apple first started out, when layoffs were required, they fired their marketing teams, HR, and business development teams. They kept all the engineers, that's because it's the engineers who actually create value. These business development teams are effectively dead weight until you have a good product to actually sell. Companies in decline, that only care about quarterly profit, are the ones who fire their engineering teams and protect their friends in business development. It's quite silly people keep saying this. Back in the day the Android fanboys (mostly but not just Samsung users) were quite negative about the M7 being the "iPhone 5 of Android", because it focused more on fancy design and lacked a removable battery and microSD slot. Poor marketing is one thing but at the time HTC did worse than even LG to appease the Android core users. I had the HTC Butterfly s which had a plastic body and a huge 3200 mAh battery. They should have launched this worldwide instead of M7.

I was and Android early adopter and owned the Hero and the One S. What frustrated me about HTC was the lack of android updates once the phone was over 6 months old. This was when Android was evolving really fast (e.g. 1.5 to 1.6 saw the introduction of turn by turn navigation). Also it meant important security updates. However HTC were really slow or non-committal about providing any updates, instead they spammed the market with new models. So in 2014 I jumped ship to Google, I'm sure many other of their customers also left for this reason. Releasing three models of phone a year and providing excellent support has been a successful model for google.

HD2 is still my favorite phone ever, it was an absolute beast and revolutionary at the time. It had the most active development community of any phone ever released, I think you could load something like 6 or 7 different OSes on it including a full Linux build. I had so much fun modding it back in the day, I still remember the anticipation and anxiety I felt firing up MAGLDR and holding my breath until it passed the "GO GO GO!" screen. Manually adjusting the partition sizes in notepad to allot enough memory to make my custom ROM run better. It's the phone that got me into Android funnily enough- first the XDA devs figured out how to run Android off the SD card, then NANDroid builds came out which could be flashed over Windows. Hands-down best dev phone ever! I used to get a lot of attention back then for having a "huge phone" too. Hard to imagine that 4.3 inches used to be considered huge lol. I just picked another one up on ebay, it's not really usable as a daily driver anymore and most of the links for modding resources have gone dead, but I just wanted to have it for my nostalgic phones collection.

My favourite era of smartphones was the early 2010s. Smartphones were still relatively new, but companies were quickly getting the hang of it. Smartphone technology was advanced to a point, but not overly advanced like today, it was at a "sweetspot". Smartphones were small and Actually comfortable to hold. Innovation in the smartphone market was drastic and exciting. And Finally, they were seen as an accessory and or a tool, not a lively hood. Don't get me wrong, smartphones today are impeccable in terms of how far they've come and what they can do. I have a galaxy 20+ and love every bit about it. But early 2010s smartphone era was just perfect in my eyes and I hope that one day, HTC will come back and wow us all once again like they did in the early 2010s!

I *LOVED* HTC!!! They made my first Android phone: The One X+. They also made my second & third Android phones: The One (M7), and the One (M8). Of those 3, the M8 was my favorite. It was just so beautifully made, in the Gunmetal finish! It was an Apple level of build quality, which was UNHEARD OF in Android phones back in those days. For the longest time, I actually thought APPLE might buy them! Apple had agreements with HTC that they never had with other Android manufacturers. They didn't chase HTC, and try to sue them into the ground, like they did with Samsung. It was almost like a truce. Also, you touched on it here, with the mention of Beats, but really: HTC kind of did everything first (everything except huge OLED displays. Samsung did those first): Stereo speakers on a smartphone (for YEARS, HTC was the ONLY manufacturer paying attention to this. It was this feature that kept me as a customer), a great audio experience in the headphones with Beats audio, buying into a music streaming service, the dual-lens camera (everyone LAUGHED when HTC did this. Even back then, I said "Yeah, everyone's laughing now, until Apple follows suit, and ends up getting credit for INVENTING it!" And that's EXACTLY what happened, of course!). Even in the pull back from the high megapixel wars that were going on with smartphone cameras at that time. HTC was the first to step back & say "Hey, high megapixel count isn't everything!". They put their money where their mouth was, and put an 4 MEGAPIXEL camera on the One M7. OK, they were probably a bit TOO uncompromising with this vision, as it really hurt them. But Apple followed suit, and for years kept their megapixel count at 12 for the rear camera, instead focusing on the quality of the sensor, and letting in more light. We're only creeping back into the high megapixel wars again NOW, in 2020. Oh, and even BlinkFeed! Everyone laughed at that, too, at the time! But now, both Apple AND Samsung have informational feeds when you swipe left-to-right on their home screens! That was HTC that did that first! So, yes: HTC was DEFINITELY ahead of its time. Unfortunately, that did not work out for them from a business perspective, but for those of us old enough to remember, HTC was one of the great innovators in the smartphone space.

@@ultimatestoryteller HMD have failed the Nokia brand. They just have no consideration for their customers after their last Nokia PureView update scandal. video is misleading, as if eveyr phone htc produces was gold, and then out of nowhere "unknown" samsung came at took it all from them. Let's start with quality, while their flagship phones were indeed high quality, their other models were miles away from it, with poor build quality, dubious design choices, laggy software, zero updates and so on. As for samsung, it was never "unknown", samsung was a giant before it even entered mobile market, comparing samsung and htc of that time is as comparing wallmart to your local grocery store owned by rashid, of course samsung will come out on top.

HTC was like Apple's Android. Their Sense UI and Hardware was the best. Even Apple wasn't able to compete their design (both hardware wise and UI wise). HTC should start focusing on Indian Market. Huge potential here and HTC can have a comeback. In India, we mostly loaded with Chinese brands, people will consider having a *Secured Android Phone* under $400.

I think that would be dire straight for HTC. Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi are flooding the Indian market with subsidized phones in an effort to build a stronghold and recoup the investment later on by selling services. While there is a great potential for growth in the Indian market there is also currently no way to make money from handset sales alone. Also, India has introduced tariffs on phone imports in a bid to establish home-grown assembly and later manufacturing capabilities. So HTC would be either penalized by import tariffs or had to establish costly local operations. Neither ideal for a company that is betting its future on the success of its next phone. I personally would focus on markets in US and Europe first. An example of Nokia (and this video, when I think about that) clearly demonstrates that people can be nostalgic about phone brands.

I was lucky enough to grow up with several HTC phones in my early to mid teens, and I couldn't have been happier. My first HTC was Desire S. It was absolutely trash in it's performance, but the charm and the UI made me get a Sensation XL next, when you got beats solo's along with the phone. This for me is the phone that first gave some real premium feeling. The half metal/aluminium removable back was a completely new feeling, as well as the screen being an entire 4,7 inches, which was massive back then. But of course, when I got the HTC One with that metal unibody, it was a different world. The classiest phone to have ever existed imo, and no other design has ever come close. It's a shame it got so little recognition, and I definitely felt the same way as described in this video when I talked to my friends about it. No one knew or even cared about the phone, and the android users around me had already been captivated by Samsung

I remember one of my friends having a HTC back in the day (in the UK), but beyond that I barely heard of them. At the time he had the HTC everyone was raving about the iPhone and it tended to be a case of you were either a Nokia loyalist, sticking to older style phones rather than smart phones, or you spent your time arguing whether iPhone or Blackberry was the best. Due to being a Nokia guy, I ended up with a phone that resembled a Blackberry before moving onto Nokia's smartphones when they finally bit the bullet and switched over. I was actually a big fan of their phones with Windows OS, as many of the features it had (and certainly the camera) was far better than the iPhone, but it just never got the support from Microsoft or the public which is why it ended up dying a death. I am now on Android as it is the most similar OS to Windows, and like the fact it is less propietary than iOS. My last couple of phones have both been Samsung ones. I just don't think HTC ever really got a foothold here. Hell, even my one friend who had one used to rave about it but withing a couple of years he moved to Apple.
