God Bless Rajah Brooke

I am a Brunei-born Chinese with Green IC(Malaysian) because both my parents are from Malaysia but came here to work when they were young and got married here. I really hoped I can atleast get a permanent residence(red ic) but at the moment there is no way eventhough i have been living here for my whole life (almost 30years) which is really dissapointing. Anyways, I have to say that eventhough Chinese are the minority here, I always feel really respected and looked up upon by the local malays, as long as you also treat them with respect. Most big businesses here are by Bruneian/Malaysian Chinese that lives here. Life is really not that bad as people imagine because most of us are ok with this kind of simple lifestyle. If you want cigarretes or alcohol, it really is very easy and safe to get (both legal and illegally). In terms of entertainment, there really is not much other than going to cafes to hangout but during my younger days, we often go to friends house to party and yes with alcohol without any issue. All in all, even without the benefits of someone with a yellow or red ic, I have to say that I very much prefer to live longterm here in Brunei than neighbouring countries such as Malaysia or SG. If I want to, I can just fly to those countries every now and then for a short getaway which is more than enough. Brunei is very safe, peaceful, no politics, EXTREMELY kind people, people of different race are kind to each other, best driving and road ethic I have seen in any country(seriously people love giving way to other drivers which is so nice to see), low cost of living, no strict rules in place despite being a muslim country, no drugs(well atleast not much if you compare), no night lifemeans my liver and lung is healthy, free education, cheap af healthcare(subsidized by the government even for foreigners living here), cheap gas, minimal competition, and I can keep going on. The biggest cons imo is sadly, the growth of the country. Recently, the country feels more backwards and "anti-tourism" which is really bad if a country wants to grow. But to grow also means to throw away the innocence(?) that makes Brunei what it is today as a great and peaceful country so I really don't know what to think of this. But yes, I can confidently say that the big majority of Bruneian Chinese enjoy the lifestyle here and are doing really well despite the restrictions but I do understand where the assumptions came from.

You are commenting true facts about Brunei. If we let that stupid woman in the interview kept showing the world Brunei is so bad, who wants to come to Brunei then ? Check with history, those chinese been interviewed by foreign media were those uneducated uncle ( wood seller ) and auntie ( wife of a watch dealer) who knew nothing but talk like those market talks but in international platforms. They were old people, we still can forgive them but this woman ? 🤦♀️🤦♀️. She doesn't deserve that yellow IC, give it to someone else
Welcome to Brunei. It is not that bad....as a Brunei born Chinese, I am lucky to be part of it. However our country does not has a good future prospect. We wish it will improve but may be too late....😢

I am a chinese born in Brunei. This movie clip is not representative of Brunei Chinese. Yellow IC is for citizen and Red IC is for PR. Like any country in the world, you can sit for an exam (with some pre-requisites) to become a citizen, very similar to Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and USA. Shame on your friend who could not explain properly. Public alcohol selling is prohibited and as chinese, I have no problem with that as this has tremendously brought down the statistics on drunk driving, social misbehaviour and domestic violances. You can still import 2 bottles and a dozen of beers per person. Cigarette has become unaffordable just like in Singapore. As a result, retailers decided not to sell them as smuggled cigarettes become competitions.
