The conductor monitors the side of the train and the platform when it departs and arrives at a station. The conductor watches to make sure people on the platform do not come into contact with the train. If a person on the platform falls and comes into contact with the train, the conductor will apply the emergency brakes. The conductor is in charge of checking tickets and making announcements while the train is traveling between stations. So he does not look at the side of the train from the window all the time. In recent years in Japan, the number of trains without conductors on board has been increasing.
