Stanford student, Eileen Gu Ailing (谷 爱 凌), fluent in Mandarin, feels very much at home in China, her mom's birthplace. She should be grateful that her single mom is the ONLY one who raised her (this was why she adopted her mom's last name). She doesn’t owe her living to only America and has rights to choose to represent China. Given how hard she had been training in the last 15 years, she deserved to be on top of the world at Beijing Winter Olympics.

She seems to still be very American, unsurprising since she grew up there. I don't think she is being ungrateful to US. Her life, training still seems to be mostly in US. It's commendable she is just trying to be a bridge between the 2 nations as well as an inspiration to Chinese girls in winter sports. Hope she doesn't end up drawing any flak from anyone. She is a lovely, gutsy girl!

As a country built by immigrants (and the dispossession of indigenous people) we are used to seeing people from other countries immigrate and switch allegiance to represent America. In these instances we don't read comments about chasing money or inflating the medal count. It's amusing to watch these salty Americans when it goes the other way. Only she grew up spending her summers in China. She truly is bi cultural and in today's international world she is a terrific model for millions of people. Eileen is beautiful, educated, fluent in Chinese language and culture. It is awe inspiring to see an authentic bicultural human excelling on the highest stage.
