@@yni005 He basically created an album of songs around his life just for this competition. That is impressive! I think he grew a lot from the experience on Singer and his music changed both from his studies (he is always listening and learning) and from how he matured as a person.

@@yni005 I have the same feeling. I think that he went through the self-actualization process and the music after that reflects the change. New World describes his feeling after ascending to "the mountaintop of dreams" alone after the Singer show (In the song Chasing Dreams with Childlike Heart, he and his friends from the Super Boy Competition have sung about scaling the highest mountain to chase their dream, so mountaintop is definitely a symbol of dreams.) Arrival is about reaching a spiritually peaceful state. Jackdaw Boy probably describes his struggle with his previous agent (aka his mentor/agent since his debut) (I found the lyrics very telling since he had some hard time in the second half of last year.) Bullfighting describes the constant struggles one may face in life and the courage to stand up and fight again. I heard that there is going to be a new song called "I Have Grown Up" in his new album, but I don't know if it is confirmed. So these songs definitely reflect his life journey.

"Singer" is a Chinese competition show for established stars where voting is done by a specially selected 500 member audience. The musically discerning group is age balanced between young and old for each of the 14 episodes. Each member votes for three favorite performances of that episode. Seven singers compete on each show and the one with the least votes is kicked off. Because it focuses on singing, a performer can use no more than two of their own compositions. Hua Chen Yu took second place behind Jessie J. in the 2018 series. The show is well run with great lighting, cinematography, musical direction and superb background singers and musicians.

A bit of his background info: HUA Chenyu (HUA is a family name), aka Hua Hua, 29 years old, is a singer-songwriter/composer in China. He is well known for his powerful vocals, dramatic stage performance and talents in composing. Hua is the most versatile artist that I have never seen. He plays piano, guitar, flute, drum...etc. He has very solid classical background but he is a rock star who can also do rap, pop, ballad, opera, musical....etc. Huahua has the power of making any songs his own! He re-arranged pretty much all the songs he sang on the "Singer 2018" stage. He's just incredibly versatile & full of artistry and creativity!!! He is super popular in China. In his Mars Concert in Beijing Bird’s Nest Stadium on 8 & 9 September 2018 (each show catered for 90,000 people), all tickets were sold out in less than 2 minutes.And all the tickets (40,000 )of his Mars concert in this year sold out in only 3 seconds!! Hua refused to make the so called "mainstream music", he said if he made music just because the audiences like it that way then his music wouldn't be 'pure'. His songs are not the catchy, easy-to-sing-along type (and he insists on doing it this way), yet people surprisingly love it. He has created his own music market, his own brand.

The lyrics and the story behind them were so inspiring and meaningful. ‘Equal to Heaven’ was related to the epic story of Monkey King (Sun Wukong as his name) fighting against evil forces , seeking truth and Buddhist scriptures in a classical novel called Journey to the West. At the beginning of the story, he called himself ‘Great Sage Equal to Heaven’ leading a group of monkeys located in Flower and Fruit Mountain and dared to challenge the authority of Jade emperor of heaven. Then he got defeated and trapped under Five-Finger Mountain transforming from fingers of Buddha. After 500 years, Tang Monk of Tang Dynasty came to save him, so Monkey King and other 2 guys helped Tang Monk fight against evil forces , seek truth and finally obtained the Buddhist scriptures. It was a really moving and inspiring story.

I really enjoyed your reaction to Hua Chenyu! I discovered him earlier this year (I was only into Kpop before too) and was so captivated by him since then. He is my favorite solo male singer of all time. He is so versatile that you will be amazed each time. Off stage, he was very easy-going, child-like in the earlier days but even then he was very wise beyond his age. Overall, I think he is very intelligent and very dedicated when it comes to music. "Wukong/Qi Tian" is his original song which uses a unique chord progression to compose, half western and half Chinese style. He is a talented singer-songwriter!!!😎😎😎 More Hua Chenyu please!!! You have only scratched the surface with this performance by Hua and I highly, highly recommend the others from Singer 2018 as they form a song cycle. All of his songs are in Chinese but have been translated so just do a search that includes the words "English Sub" so that you can follow along.

Funny that you mentioned about all the competitors must’ve felt because ever since Hua Chenyu joined the competition (he was a substitute, appear in the 4th week) everyone stepped out of their comfort zone, everyone tried to step up their game. Everyone was trying to be unique and memorable. Hua Chenyu threatened them that way, and he wasn’t even trying to win the competition. He just wanted to let the audiences know every story he tried to tell in every of his performances. Can you react to Hua Chenyu - Nunchuks at Singer 2018 next please? Wow, you picked a jewel. His personality is just as unique as his magnetic performances. He is one you will want to see all his performances to see all his versatilities and talent in composing. There will be suggestions to watch Fake Monk. It may be better if you see three or four of his other performances to warm up to this one. It's one of his best artistry in performance, but very dark. Until you get to know Hua a little better, then you will understand this performance. Most of his performance is more impactful with Eng Sub. Although it's hard to follow sometimes, because some of songs are fast paced. But even if you don't you can still feel the impact of his emotions just through his performance. Hope you continue the journey to "Mars" and become his Martians (his fan).

Have you watched Dimash yet? If not, try Singer 2017, SOS. Dimash is now a 25 year old heartthrob that can sing like no one else on this planet, his range is 6 Octaves. Dimash is Kazakh and what I love about him besides his singing is that he hs still so humble and the man genunly loves his fans whom he calls DEARS. He was 22 when he performed SOS, his first performance on Singer. It wasn't long before fan clubs started springing up all over the world. I feel so honored to be alive to see him reaching superstar status. His full name is Dimash Kudaibergen.

SO there is room in many of us to love them both. They are a lot a like in many ways. Dimash contracted in China, twice. I do not know if he still is or not. Dimash is in Russia now performing. I would like to offer a bit of background information if you don't mind. Hua has two songs on this subject. "Great Sage Equal to Heaven" (the show "NEXT" in 2016) and "Equal to Heaven (Qi Tian)" (Singer 2018) are about the same mythical hero, the Monkey King. The Monkey King, who is born from a rock, has great capabilities, but he is belittled by the established heavenly court since he is an outsider. He breaks free from the ridicule and prejudice, and wreaks havoc in the heavens. After defeating the heaven's army, the Monkey King proclaims himself "Great Sage Equal to Heaven", meaning no one in the heavenly court is above him and can order him around. The second part of his story is that the Greatest Buddha forces/persuades/bargains the Monkey King to use his capabilities to benefit all mankind, and help escort a devote monk to travel to retrieve Buddha's teachings. The "force" part is a permanently attached headband that can shrink to cause great pain. "Great Sage Equal to Heaven" is the song from a "Next" episode where Hua was given a piece music from an 80's TV series about the same Monkey King. He composed the song in 24 hours. This song showcases the free spirit of the Monkey King and, for some extra fun, the lyrics makes a reference to a character that the female fellow host played in a similar movie. "Equal to Heaven (Qi Tian)" is a song for a recent movie, "Wukong". You watched this song in this video. Wukong is the name given to the Monkey King after he becomes a Buddhist practitioner and gets on the journey with the monk. This song is more epic and more somber. It almost tells the whole story of the Monkey King. Hua tells a better story in his five minutes than the whole movie. Somewhere in the lyrics, Hua sings "the constricting headband has not yet been forged, I can still smile". As you said in the video, chills.....

No subtitles though. The first two minutes of the video shows some behind-the-scene footage of Hua's struggle to compose a whole new song within 24 hours, from this vintage theme music from a TV series in the 80's. The up-beat part of the back ground music during this first two minutes is the actual music piece that Hua has to work with. The second part of the video, from about 6:00, is his challenger's performance. I would suggest skipping the second half to watch it in private. A general note about the show "NEXT" (season 1 2016, season 2 2017). A group of established signers are challenged by aspiring ones. The challengers can sing the songs of their choice, and designate songs for the stars to perform with 24 hours to prepare. Hua gets a few difficult challenges (Skate Board Shoes 2016, Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Drinking Alone), along with other more conventional ones that resulted in awesome performances nonetheless. it is recommended to check out the original version first to fully appreciate the musical genius of Hua Chenyu in his renditions.
