Today I am going to talk about an alarming and increasingly common problem in smartphones, especially the Huawei P20 Pro: battery swelling. In this post, we are going to see how to deal with this problem in a safe way to avoid damage to the device or even a battery explosion.
It all starts when a customer arrives at my workshop with a Huawei P20 Pro whose battery is noticeably swollen. Given this scenario, I know that the work will be delicate and that we must act with caution to avoid accidents.

We start by disassembling the top of the device, carefully removing the hidden screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Subsequently, we remove the upper antenna, the battery connector and the flash.
Inflated batteries pose a serious risk, caused by various factors such as the use of non-original chargers, humidity or strong shock. In these cases, the most prudent thing to do is take the device to a specialized workshop.
Once the space is freed up, I use a plastic card, pick, and isopropyl alcohol to pry the battery from the chassis of the device. We do not use any metal tools, as carelessness can puncture the battery and result in total loss of the phone.
With the battery removed, I inspect the damage it has caused. I discover that the FPC connector, which is responsible for supplying power from the charging port to the motherboard, is broken and must be replaced.
We proceed to remove the screws from the bottom of the device and remove the protection. We replace the damaged flex cable with a new one. After this, it is time to install the new battery in the device.
The old parts are recycled, and although they could be repaired, in many cases, such as in Spain, it is not worth it due to the cost of labor.
After the device is reassembled, we turn on the phone. Seeing that it turns on correctly, we feel a surge of relief: the repair has been successful.
This is my day-to-day job: solving complicated problems and ensuring that my clients' devices are back to working order. My goal is not just to repair, but to educate people on how to best care for their devices and prevent issues like these. Remember, safety is always the priority and any work of this type must be carried out with the utmost care to avoid any risk. Until next time!
