Steve Mags is an encyclopedia of car knowledge. So impressive

What is amazing in retrospect is the time that was spent designing wheel covers for cars during the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's. Sometimes there were even yearly changes especially if there was a new body style that happened. Thank you for continuing this series as it shows where resources were going in Detroit! As always I appreciate your historic information!

Rover was not Rootes Group. That was Hillman-Sunbeam-Humber. Rootes by bought by Chrysler, in an unsuccessful bid to internationalize. The most well known Rootes product in the US was the Sunbeam Tiger, Maxwell Smart's car. Fun fact.....After Chrysler bought them, Tigers were sold by Chrysler dealers and were forced to provide warranty coverage for the 260-289 Ford engines that were in them! One reason they were quickly dropped. Rover was a once independent company that got absorbed by BMC, and later became British Leyland.

The Fratzog was so cool. On my dad's 66 Coronet the Fratzog appeared on each wheel cover and the center of the horn ring. By the time my 74 Charger was built, the one and only Fratzog was on the center of the steering wheel. It was such a cool emblem with such a weird name. They should have used it as the emblem on the new Challengers and Chargers instead of a Rams head.

The most interesting thing about those Cyclone wheel covers, IMO, is that the front and rear covers are different. I can't think of any other car where that's the case.

What I'd consider one of the more complex (and striking in its looks) wheelcovers would be the finned monsters that came on my mom's 67 Olds Toronado. And what a cool looking car that was, front to back.

The " '76 Impala" wheel cover was actually from a Caprice. The broad shield with the fleur-de-lis is the Caprice emblem, while Impala wheel covers of the era just had the bowtie in the middle. Also, the big 1975-76 Impalas never got rectangular headlights. The Caprice got them in 1976.

My '65 Buick Riviera had that hub cap with the exception that the Buick logo center piece was a Riviera logo center piece. So, I kind of disagree with you there that the wheel cover was not a Riviera wheel cover. Looks like Buick used that cover for many of their cars and swapped out the center piece. But damn man, you are impressive with your knowledge. Love the channel!

I know 75-76 Pontiac full size cars, Catalina, Bonneville, the square lights were an option. I don't know if Chevrolet did that too, or just went with the squares for '76. The Chevy truck wheelcover, AMT includes those in all their 67-72 truck and Blazer kits. I remember building the monster truck version of the Blazer and those were on the chrome tree. Somewhere I have a pair of fake chrome steelie caps. I presumed they're aftermarket because the center is cast out of cheap potmetal. I also have a pair of 55-56 Chevy but they're generic caps, with bars instead of bowties. The Imperial cap, the crown was red-clear plastic.

Funny you mention the mid eighties Citation I had one, I forget the year and the interesting part was it was made in Canada. The only obvious way to tell was the speedometer, it had the big numbers in Kilometers and the small numbers in MPH. It took me awhile to get used to that. Not a horrible car but I certainly wouldn't want another one.

The Rover 3.5, is not the GM 215. Rover purchased the design from GM, then manufactured the engine themselves, making improvements, and getting the casting process right, something GM struggled with. It was a GM engine, but hey, they sold it. From 1965 it was a British engine. GM are still doing stupid things.
@DanEBoyd2 жыл бұрын
Buick sold off their 215 V8 to Rover, and at around the same time, they sold off their V6 to Jeep - and I think later bought it back. Then ten to fifteen years later, they were the first GM division to stop producing their own V8s. I guess that's the price they paid to not end up like Oldsmobile and Pontiac...
