I think this is a wonderful opera with very real characters. They are just as stubborn and self-deluded as any friend could be, and you understand them. Also, the music is gorgeous.

I, too, cannot understand why Barče’s aria seems almost unknown in the West. I first came across it a few days ago in a performance by the late and much-lamented Patricia Janečková and that led me to look for the opera itself. Many thanks to abd0987 for providing the subtitles. There appear to be no professional recordings of Patricia singing it and the best I’ve found is in this amateur video of her in an open-air performance in Berlin.
