What a wonderful feel good video. A real testament to the power of the internet to do good: where a man's passion, professionalism and good nature has created a community of like minded people who want to come together and be part of something. Humanity at its best. I'm sure days like these will help sustain Ian and Miss Hubnut during the difficult times ( such as Betty's crash) and confirm that the hard work is worthwhile and that they are very much appreciated by their Hubnut community.

The good old junk yard or whatever you want to call it. You could fix your car so quickly in those days, compared to the weeks it can take if you go the new dealer part route. I was amused at how you had the Mazda 929 estate next to Betty, Back in the 80's of the last century, a friend & I were going to get a 929 wagon & fit it with a Falcon 6 cylinder motor, & use it as a tow car for our race cars (little Datsuns). Never went past the planning stages, as we couldn't find a 929. Thanks for the memory jog.

RE: the Mustang, yeah, it's the old Ford Falcon straight six. You can tell if it's the base 170 cubic inch version or the optional 200 cubic inch by the wheel hubs: the cars with the 170 CID engine have four lug wheels, while the 200 cars have five lug wheels. In true Ford fashion, the cost cutting measures on the old "thriftpower" six (which lots of Mustang guys call the "spendthrift six" ) consists of an integrated intake manifold and cylinder head. Ford never allowed the US engineers to design a cross flow head for their straight sixes-they feared that cross flow designs would open the door for speed modifications. Ford wanted you to buy a v8 for going fast. One of the changes that the Aussies made to the engine was a cross flow head 😎

That was an interesting comment to read. My Dad loved the Mustang, and it's really interesting to learn curious aspects of the car like that.

Ford Australia also upped the cubic inches to 250 or 4.1L but even that wasn't the largest capacity 6 in the country. That was Chrysler's Hemi 6 at 265ci or 4.3L.
@wanderinggentile3 жыл бұрын
@@AUmarcus Ford North America offered a 4.1 (250) in the 1971-73 Mustang, Torino, Granada/Monarch, and as an upgrade for the Maverick LDO. These engines stunk for power, making sometimes well under 70kw, but torque was close to 300nm. Ford decided around 1980 to replace the 3.3 and 4.1 Thriftpower with the 3.8 Essex (North America) V-6. This engine was "inspired" by tearing down a Buick 3800 and copying everything just closely enough to avoid a massive lawsuit. The North American Essex engine did not share the Thriftpower's durability, nor was it able to match the "luxury" image that inline 6 engines gained in the late 80s. The Barra evolution of the Thriftpower architecture would have actually been well-suited to North America due to significant similarities in Australian and North American tastes.
