with 4000 miles ahead of you, this was the best solution to all of your problems at once. it's a wise man who knows when to go for broke, rather than chance a dead engine on an adventure.

Difference between a mechanic & a tinkerer, the confidence & trust in your own work to connect up stuff like exhausts, & fit cowlings, before firing engines up.

I worry for future generations that the words spoken and the tasks undertaken will be lost in the mists of time, along with the ability to fix stuff - let this video stand as testament to what can easily be achieved with some good old fashioned knowledge & a fist full of average tools. Great work ... for she will go to the ball ....
@wacholder56905 жыл бұрын
Hi ! You noted that the 652 made strange noises and in *this* video you said that the rods on it had a side play. So I think the 652 block was going to develope a rod-bearing issue - maybe due to occasional oil starving or slightly clogged oil intake. The spare block with 652 kit may turn out as the better choice for the road trip. But you better check the oil on a daily basis for consistency and some sort of crud. The spare engine hat water damage on the cylinders already - so humidity might have gone inside the block itself. Take care & Good luck for both of you !

Great job getting Elly ready for Croatia Ian, really admire your patience and the way you doggedly keep plugging away and nothing appears to phase you!!! I think the 652cc barrels and pistons with the spare block appears a perfect solution :) I still prefer the sound of the 602cc as it sounds so much sweeter but on the long Croatia trip I think you'll really appreciate the extra torque of the 652cc conversion. As you said the difference in torque is really noticeable and must drop gearchanges by 500rpm. Hope you have a really enjoyable and safe trip Ian :)

Congratulations, Ian! I was honestly elated to see Elly start so neatly after you put the exhaust on! Even for me, from the distance of time and space that was a happy moment :). She pulls really nicely. Coming from a country where the Fiat 126 was the most popular car at the time of my childhood, it's somewhat unusual for me to see a 650cc engine make a car so lively on comparison. Well, the 126 could give an impression of being lively, but a) it was mostly an impression (due to noise and the ride quality) and b) you really had to floor it as if your life depended on it :D. All the best for the journey! This series was so amazing. I understand it did require editing, because all this screwing and unscrewing takes time. But I hope you don't bother to much with editing on the road, Ian: this is such good stuff, it's plenty tasty even if it were to be completely raw! :) I wish you good internet transfers -- but most of all, the best of fortune on your trip!
