I like the word "Hotchback". My dad has a 2016 Sport. He's 80. Practical. Good crash protection for its size. Not too big for him to struggle with parking and town. Relatively economical. Peppy enough. Long enough legs on a higher milage trip. Good headlights. High enough seats so him and my mom can board and alight without discomfort. Looks pretty in metallic blue. Good brakes. Has a satnav to help for him. The only things he doesn't like is a lack of rear visibility when parking and he doesn't find it as easy to judge in gaps as his previous car, a 1996 Vectra 1.6.

Have owned a 2014 1.2 Swift for the last 6 years. 55 mpg, £30 per Year tax, cheap to maintain, coming up to 100k miles without a snag, by far the most reliable car I have ever owned. (Makes up for my 3.7 Petrol Jeep Cherokee "Sunday Car" 😂)
@PandaEatsPlanetEarth

I owned one of these for a few years. I've owned much more powerful stuff than this, and yet I always think back to how much I loved this car. Yeah it's a tad noisy, the ride is a bit jumpy, and it's not exactly fast....but find a twisty road and it is absolutely ludicrous fun. I could tear round corners with no trouble whatsoever. The peddles are really well balanced as well and the steering was heavy and so you got some nice feedback. I really do miss it.

Awesome review Ian. Reminds me of my Fiesta Zetec. That was slow but just such a blast. Driving from Kendal to Lancaster for work is an awesome driving memory. I miss the raw thrills you get from cars like this. Power isn't everything. It's the noise, feeling of speed and connection to the road that makes it so exciting. 🙂

You're driving this properly! At 7:25, thats what I've been trying to get James to do! Between mother and I, we've had 7 Swifts of various guises (this generation and later) and even the non Sport were revvy and sounded fantastic. The later car mentioned above (ZC32) takes the creature comforts and refinement (same engine, 6 speed 'box and 136 bhp) to the next level, without losing out on the fun. Also, the later cars from around August 2007, they raised the rev limit to 7,100 rpm.

I bought a brand new 15 plate 1.2 Swift and was fairly happy with it for about a year, until by chance I spotted a 62 reg Mini Cooper for sale and fell in love with it on the spot. I swapped the Swift for it and never looked back. The Mini is long gone now too, although I do hanker after it now and again. I currently drive a boring a f Kia 1.25 Picanto, but next year I'm looking to swap it for something a little more exciting. Not a Swift Sport though.

I will always champion these little cars - this generation of Swift onwards are the best small 3-door hatch on the market all things considered. They're a riot to drive, fantastically packaged, pretty, interesting and the 'Sport' trim actually means something unlike 99% of cars. I drove a brand new 1.0 Boosterjet (3 cylinder turbo) Swift recently and I was absolutely blown away by it. I'm certain I will be looking to buy one at some point in the near future.

160BHP? That would surprise me. If i remember correctly they came with 125HP, which must equate to 121-123BHP. Is there a special version i haven't heard of? Another thing: At 60 you say it turns "over 3000rpm", but at 70 you said "getting on for 3800 revs". That's quite the gearing if true. That aside: I've known of people who've owned Suzukis that have been rebuilding gearboxes at 180K kilometers, so i'll believe the box in this one is crap too. ..and because i've seen examples of Suzukis that haven't been built to last, i won't be buying one. But i've always like the Swift Sport, and have seen lots of great reviews on them. Fun little thing :)

The A399 from South Molton to Brayford and then on to Combe Martin is one of the best roads in the uk IMHO. So varied with lots of challenging technical sections, sections which seem to repeat themselves and some long straight bits. Great in most cars. Best avoided for most of the summer but epic when quiet. Don't shout about it or it will get spoiled with low speed limits. Only willing to share this with Hubnutters 😉

It depends on the owner. I have a SEAT Ibiza FR and I had contemplated modifying it but the more I thought about it when driving over pot holes and getting a bad back I thought nah I will keep it stock and well looked after. Had mine nearly 9 years now, I am its first owner and literally the only things that have been majorly replaced so far are two from suspension coils and shocks last year (due to the UK's ultra smooth roads) and two windscreens due to flying debris. I have got a list of little things that require doing next and these are front anti roll bar bushes as they commonly start to squeak after a while on VW made vehicles and there is a faint wheel bearing sound just starting to be heard, but overall the rest of the car touch wood is mechanically sound.

my dad had a 1,5 vvt from 2005 - bought it new, and drove it to 330.000 kms, with absolutely the bare minimum of servicing, the only thing it was bad on it were the front wishbones, the bushings died after 60k kms at the most. oh and a radiator that packed up which he thought was a headgasket, new headgasket fitted at 160k kms - the bores looked like new...

First car I ever bought was a 1 litre 90s Swift 'Sky' for a few hundred £s off eBay. They shared the same platform as the Subaru Justy which was the same car but 4 wheel drive. It was great for what I needed and came in the most awesome colour - cobalt blue, best colour car I've owned! Very basic and tiny 3 cylinder engine but my 'limited edition' Sky came with Oz alloys, a spoiler, blue dials and nice bucket seats. I took it everywhere, up and down the country, then when it developed a gear box whine and the underside rusted through I took it on a trip to Belgium as a final drive. It was the second Suzuki I owned (first was inherited) and it concreted the reliability of Japanese cars for me. It's a shame that era Suzuki was terrible for rust as it's killed almost all of them. Always liked the new shaped Swifts and considered buying one but it never happened. These when they came out in 2005 (after a 2 year break, the last gen Swift stopped in 03) were a big step up for Suzuki and pushed them to the forefront of the hatchback lineup, competing with models they never could do previously.

Really glad you enjoyed it Ian, may not be the hottest of hatches but I find they're a really chuckable thing. What mods has it had done to get 160bhp? One thing I find odd is the Sport doesn't have split rear seats, the rest do. There is a great curry hook in the boot and it should also have a removable false floor to make it a level boot with the back seat folded. Those nets are not standard, I got mine for £5 from an online auction site. 👍🏼

I'd probably stick with my 172 Clio for what I use it - sitting unused in my garage in Tassie...Interesting about the gearing, my 1972 Fiat Sport Coupe (also sitting unused in a garage but in Melbourne) is at 4000 rpm at 70 mph. Mind you that only has 110hp so whilst it is magic to drive, it wouldn't qualify as a "hot" anything in these days of 300+he hatchbacks.

Sold my 172 and miss that delightful little car. So much fun on back country roads. Hope you get a chance to start enjoying yours.

@@user-ih7gc7dt9l So do I. I did bring it up here to Alice Springs for a while but the desert is pretty harsh and it would have ruined it. Besides, the roads don't have enough bends!

The Swift Sport is definitely on my radar as a spicier replacement for my old Fabia 1.2. Sensible prices, what more do you want?

@@televisionandcheese you can't do much unless there's a turbo,. You can add a little bit of fuelling but it doesn't add too much

Does it qualify as a HutNut car? They are very popluar here in NZ, and available as manuals (Kiwi's love auto's, which is a pain if you're an import and still like manuals) Just lack a bit of interior space to be a replacement for a Jazz.
