How far can you drive with no alternator? I unwittingly had to find out as I tried to drive from Birmingham to mid-Wales, in heavy rain, in a Rover 75 that was not charging. Exciting times!

When my Morris Traveller recently exploded it's battery thanks to a faulty reg/rec - The RAC replaced the battery and repaired the altinator from parts they had been carrying about since he started with the RAC.

I had to call the AA recently for the battery dying on my restored Rover 600, as we got chatting , it turned out that the mechanic had bought a Moggy for £800 and fully restored it himself, I ended up with him showing it to me! It is pristine, one of the older ones with the wing bulges that continue into the front doors. Returning to HubNut's problem in this video, it has long been a bugbear of mine that modern cars give little feedback on what's happening (battery charge, oil pressure etc ), what good is a light that tells you when it's all too late? Some cars and vans now don't even have a coolant temperature gauge.

I once had the alternator on my Holden Camira sieze up about 30km west of Balladonia station, middle of the Nullarbor plain... I took it off, drove back to Balladonia and put the battery on charge overnight. I drove it the several hundred kms to Norseman in the morning with everything off and all fingers and toes crossed. The chap in the garage told me it would take a week to get one shipped out from Perth... But he then told me he could fix it and proceeded to machine out the castings and fitted oversized bearings. Job done, only cost me a day!
@alasdair4161
@alasdair4161 3 жыл бұрын
I can join your club.. I hired a Camira to drive Perth to Adelaide back in the late 80's, I hit a kangaroo about 30km from Nullabor roadhouse and along with the front bumper, headlight, wing and bonnet, it smashed the radiator and split a trans cooler line. I'd purchased full insurance and it was too far to walk so I did the obvious hire car thing and just kept driving it, and only just made it to the Tale inn. As soon as I started driving the dashboard had every warning light on and by the time I could see the roadhouse in the distance I had to keep it flat to the boards to just keep the thing moving, it was down to about 10kph and literally seized solid as soon as I turned it off, the hideous sounds, smoke and fumes were amazing and with half the car hanging off, part of the bumper dragging on the road with plumes of smoke I had an audience as I drove in. It was like living the final scene from Duel... with angry road trains almost pushing my rear bumper. They (Hertz from memory) sent a flatbed the next day with a brand new Camira and had to drag the old one back onto the truck with a winch.. no problems.. always get full insurance... lol

Oh heavens, this reminds me of the time the alternator failed on my E60. It ran for forty miles up the A1 until I got to the dealer, where the car expired. What was 'fun' was watching more and more of the car shut down as the computers closed systems down to conserve power: first was the gearbox, which locked into 3rd - sadly, it also closed the speedo sensor down so I had no speedo! More and more died until even iDrive shut down - my biggest disappointment was that it didn't sing "Daisy, Daisy" before it did...

Well done for getting home, you are spot on about limited warning in modern cars when alternators pack up, the alternator in my Mercedes ML 270 packed up on a day trip with all the kids (5) last summer, everything was, fine then the battery light came on and within five minutes the whole dash lit up like a Christmas tree and the car started shaking like the engine was about to fall out. I remember when an alternator failure would give loads of warning, not anymore it seems.

Love your channel. This has happened to me 4 times! Once on a late unlamented Saturn [I'm in Canada] which was simply dead when I came out at 2:00 a.m. to drive home. Twice on a Subaru Legacy with almost no warning while driving - on both occasions with an amazing light display on the dashboard followed by complete immobility. On one of those occasions I at least got it into a parking lot before it turned into a boat anchor. And once on my MGB while on the highway - that was the least stressful: nice warm day, no no heater, lights etc on, so I got it home with no problems. Nail biting though......and ironic that the alternator on the MGB was an original Lucas and therefore lasted far longer than the stuff on my modern cars.

Well done Ian, I'm sure that Miss Hubnut and the Hubnut-lets were relieved that you made it home. I've had the joy of trying to make it home in a Rover 418 TDI with the Peugeot XUD7TE engine and a faulty alternator. The memory of cars flashing at me in the twilight as I only had my side lights on haunts me to this day. Of course, It was on that day that a massive crash had occurred on the route home, I had the choice of creeping through traffic, or switching off the engine and waiting. I chose to push on, but I do wish that I'd elected to find a supermarket carpark to stop in and wait it out before begging for a jumpstart from a willing stranger. The car made it to almost 9 miles from home before conking out, and I rolled down the long hill and into a pub carpark. I picked up the car the next day, using jumpleads and a leisure battery to bring it home. An alternator from the scrappy soon had it running again. Since then I've learnt that alternator faults can be readily fixed in a home garage, but I was younger and far more naive (despite my then far more luxurious hair) back in the days of yore...

Nice blog here. My missus used to have a Rover 820e fastback (2 litre petrol) for around 8 years, 1992 to 2000. It had repeated problems with the alternator, the giveaway was the wipers going slow before it ground to a halt. After a couple of alternator replacements and a new battery, the problem seemed to rectify itself. There seemed to be an issue with Rover electrics for a number of years, I currently have a Rover 75 Connoisseur estate diesel, so far no electrical problems, or any other defects. Time alone will tell, but it's really nice to drive.

I had a similar experience with a 51 plate Diesel Mondeo, the battery light would come on so I’d have to wiggle a wire to get it to start charging again, this battery scenario lasted about a week when one morning it just decided to pack up altogether, the light came on, 15 miles later the lights went really dim, shortly after the engine cut out as I was steering round a bend on a pitch dark A road, and top it all off I blew the near side tyre and alloy wheel dropping into a deep drain in the side of the road. It took 4 hours for me to get finally recovered! So you had my full sympathy there for your situation.

I remember my alternator failing about a year ago. All the lights came on the dash as though something catastrophic had happened, then all the lights went out! Always disconcerting, I seem to recall even the hazards didn't work. Luckily I was in a lit up road, on my way to work. The recovery man came out, took me home, I had a few beers instead of going to work. Huzzah! (I was working nights at the time btw, I'm not an alcoholic!).

Nice one! I've had the same happen to me in an old Granada facelift, the belt driving the alternator snapped! The answer how far can you get totally depends on how many electrical gadgets you have running and how good your battery is? It was a wet dark night, so I had wipers, heater, blower and head and tail lights. First thing I noticed was how heavy the steering began to get, gradually getting worse, to the point the steering became so hard it would hardly turn! Lights slowly getting dimmer, turned wipers off to conserve battery, luckily I was only around 4 miles from home and managed to limp home just!! 😮🤔😁😎👍

Rover P4s featured prominently, of course. I did not suffer "range anxiety" very often. But I did live in a permanent state of anxiety more generally, because even Rovers did not go on forever. And I, too, hoped that whatever was about to go wrong, would miraculously fix itself. It never did.

Wow, that was a hair raising experience. Saw the Ami already reviewed by Jonny Smith, looking forward to your video. Oh, don't forget to hook up a battery charger to Rita, it would be very HubNut if you had to move the car out the unit and it conks out at a point you need to tow it back in again. 😉😅

Thats what I call an EPIC. I have had a few alternator failures and limp home episodes. Always in the worst weather and at night.

I had to change my Rover's alternator this year. She's now decided to inflict a different version of 'mild peril' on me by randomly refusing to start. The starter motor was changed not that long ago and I think I have finally worked out that if she refuses to start, i just need to wiggle trigger wire from ignition to solenoid and all is well. I could do without the tension though, so I could empathise with your scenario. In my case, before working out the issue, it involved 20 minutes at a Sainsbury's petrol station desperately hitting the starter motor with a hammer before she finally started. Glad it alll worked out.

Had a similar problem once, turned out tobe the brushes like you mentioned on their last legs. Managed to swap them out. Worth using rainx on windscreen if youre travelling on faster rds they negate the use of wipers almost entirely.

One of my previous 75s did this to me but I used the age old "percussive maintenance" method that seemed to work to get it home.

It's great when the battery gets so low the dash lights go nuts. Like having a rave behind the steering wheel.

Once had an alternator issue travailing from Devon back to Northampton in a Renault Espace IV. Not fun as things start to shut down until the inevitable half way home. We we in the AA so they charged our battery with a super fast charger and then followed us for a while. We got home safe, the alternator was quite easy to change.

With these atrocious weather conditions, we should be driving boats not cars! Can't wait for the Ami video. Take care, I'm so glad you got home safe. Bet the family were very happy to see you.

How weird, happened to me last Friday near Towcester! Was in my '98 Vectra and first the instruments all failed, then the ABS light and airbag warning light come on, then lights get dim, wipers stopped, and finally the power steering went before it started sputtering and gave up the ghost, luckily just got it to a lay-by! AA charged my battery for 20 mins and followed me 10 mins up the road to the garage I use where it'll stay til they're back in the New Year. Luckily I broke down near a Mcd's 😀

You did well!! I had an alternator fail on a Vauxhall Signum diesel a few years back, it managed the grand total of 4 (yes 4!) miles before grinding to a halt on the side of the road.

@@HubNut Yes, I had a similar experience with my Hyundai a couple of years ago; no warning light, just headlights going dim, then slow wipers, then no go, all in the space of about six miles.

Better than the old Top Gear. There was once a time you could drive all day in a diesel with the dynamo gone. Modern technology not always the bee's knees. Will watch your alternater change video with interest Incase I ever have mine fail on my 75 CDTI. Although everything that's failed on it so far has had little BMW stickers on it.

Rita did very well. My transit custom put the charging warning light on and managed 6 miles before the whole lot cut out and the engine turned off. Good old rover not letting you down.
