This 1986 Peugeot 305 GTX offers an intriguing mix of humdrum estate and sporty underpinnings. With a 1905cc XU engine, similar to that used in a 205 GTi, it's certainly different! It's a very clever estate too, as this video demonstrates.

I had a 1472cc X reg 305 GL estate around 24 years ago, in my teens. Red with marvelous brown interior. The gear stick sheared clean off at its base in my hand at a roundabout one night. My passengers and I thought that fairly hilarious. A phillips screwdriver poked in the remaining stub of shaft served as an emergency replacement, and for some time after. I fitted push button accessory, ignition and starter motor switches to the dash after the ignition barrel packed up. This car was ahead of its time. Instead of sorting the collapsed rear suspension, a previous owner had spaced the rear wheels out with penny washers to limit the standard 155 R14 tyres on steels rubbing from the excessive negative camber. It would corner on three wheels without too much effort. It was knackered, but I loved it.

My grandad has a Peugeot 305 sedan in beige. It's been neglected, has dents on every panel, door handles are broken off, but keeps going on forever! It's a car from back in the day that Peugeot made French tanks. There are still plenty off 404, 305 and 504 Peugeots driving around in Africa and south America.

In this day when most people drive SUVs, we forget there was a time when the family station wagon (or estate, if you like) was the hauler of choice. I still prefer a nice wagon over an SUV, especially when they are as good looking as this one (shame about the wheels).

SUV's aren't load luggers they are "lifestyle" vehicles and probably 90 % of them won't do anything more than your average car will do. They certainly don't have the capacity to lug loads! I didn't realise these had such a practical load area especially with the suspension design.

Totally agree inefficient style over substance. bloddy USA style pick ups are the worst hanging over parking spaces. I blame the monster truck shows of the 90s. Extinction rebellion, instead of annoying people, should protest to to tax large cars out of existence unless you need them for your work.

My thoughts exactly. I wish we could get these cars in North America. The electric window buttons aren't that out of place. It's the same on a Peugeot 604 and also the Aston Martin Valonte and Vantage. Interesting and unique design no doubt. It's kind of like Saab with the ignition key in the center console. Just unique albeit quirky. What I'd really like is an Aston Martin "Shooting brake" wagon or estate as you say in the UK. Oh I'd just love to have one of these. I don't suppose you could do a road test on one of these? I guess it's not exactly a Hubnut type of car is it. Oh well a man can dream can't he? All good.

First car memory I have is of my parents Peugeot 305 Break, I believe in GR trim. We made great use of the flat floor with the rear seats down when we went on vacation, my parents would create an immense bed (or it seemed immense to me at the time) so my sister and I could sleep during the long night drive to France. In France you can still see a 305 GR Break in use as a family car. They don't rust in southern France like they do in more northern latitudes...

@@gti505 last summer was my first visit to France in 5 years; apart from the 305, I saw a Simca Aronde, Traction Avant and a Matra Murena driving around and there was a Citroën LNA for sale at the roadside. I lost count of the 2CVs! Last summer, apart from the 305, Aronde and Murena, I saw (browsing through my phone pictures now) a MkI Fiesta, Peugeot 505 STD Turbo, Lancia Gamma Berlina, Alfasud Sprint, Renault 4, 5 and Rodeo, Volvo 1800E, Triumph Vitesse, Citroën Méhari and Traction Avant. All on French registration and in use regular enough to drive to the market or the supermarché. It is clear that the French are cherishing older cars more than they used to.

This is why the the 405 was such a revelation, The 305 by 1987 was looking pretty dated, but was a decent car at launch and an alternative to the standard offerings from Ford/Vauxhall/Rover.

The second generation cars had proper gearboxes and proper clutches so it wasn't as much of an issue. The earlier ones, though, well, the clutches seemed to be made out of digestive biscuits. A friend of mine had a very late diesel 305 estate which racked up just over 250,000 miles on its original clutch, and it certainly wasn't driven gently...

@@gosportjamie Oddly enough I did put a clutch in mine (Series One 1.5 SR), but it had done 70,000 miles when I bought it for £1500 in 1982.. Its an easy job as long as you can beg/steal/borrow a puller. I never had any gearbox trouble, but I think regular oil changes are vital to all box in sump cars.

When I was at primary school my friends Dad had an "E" reg 305 GLD estate in dark red, it's funny how certain cars stick in your mind 25 years later. Equally weird is that given the choice I'd rather have a go in any of the older run of the mill cars you've reviewed than any new car.

A correction - the 305 never used the Douvrin suitcase petrol engine. It has completely different capacity engines that were carry overs and developments of the previous engines in the 204 and 304, 1290cc and 1472cc. They were transverse upright engines with the gearbox behind. The Douvrin suitcase engine was used in the 104 and 205 (and Renault 14 and Citroen Visa and early 1.4. BXs).

The 305 is a very capable car I had a earlier 1.5 305 saloon for a short time before moving onto a 309. The one I owned was very rough at the time but could be hustled along quite nicely. Nice to see a survivor being kept on the road.

Nice to see this one still going strong. I had an early style saloon on a T reg. GX model, I think. Great car - I bought it from a farmer who, not typically, had really looked after it. It had the biggest mudflaps I had ever seen on a car - he had made them himself by cutting some kind of industrial rubber flooring to shape. They did the job - no rust behind them! One of those I'd have back if I could.

Love this video! My neighbour had a D-reg 305 GTX estate in dark blue bought new. It followed on from W-reg and A-reg 1.5SR estates and he recalls the 1.9 was so much faster than the smaller engine. Staying loyal to Peugeot, he followed the 305 GTX with F&K reg 405 GTX estates. Thanks for bringing back the memories!

ahhh..my dad had a metallic beige GT estate, i badgered him for years and eventually we became the proud owners of a dark mettalic blue GTX. I thought it was the business, fast-ish and it sounded great, handled really well too. Only did about 28mpg though..those were the days. This looks like an earlier version: choke button, and lighting binnacle were different in later models: with infra-red 'plip' unit overhead.

My first van, back in the mid-eighties, was a 305 (1905 XUD), and it was a brilliant workhorse, but I outgrew it. So in ‘87 I bought my first real van - a Mitsubishi L300 LWB. A 305 SRD Break came up for sale via a customer; it was a great family motor, but it had the wheezy 1769cc engine, and was dreadfully slow! I think our (lovely) little bight yellow 2CV6 was able to “see it off the lights”... Enter my first BX - the first of six; a DTR Turbo (vía another customer). Same 1769 engine, but a world apart on performance. A real stormer, BITD!

Great to see a proper review on an old 305. I still have 2 running an Automatic and a GTX, definatley would agree the GTX isnt particularly smooth tootling about it preferrs to be revved but is good fun, fuel inection would have been nice if the 305 had recieved it.

Handy little motor, that. Only time I've been in a 305 it was a taxi, a diesel. I was suprised by how supple the ride was and the seats were lovely. I do like a comfy car.

Saw a few of these knocking around in the 80s and 90s and never really gave them a second look, but they are a really good well designed estate car with loads of space in a boxy shape so can get loads of gear etc in. I nearly bought a mid range saloon version because it reminded me of the first Audi 80. Both are very pretty cars. My first Pug was a 405 GL and I went on to a 306 Meridian, then a 406 HDi and now a latest generation 308 Allure e-HDi. All of them have been great cars with their own personalities.

The lady of the house wanted to upgrade her old Mazda with a less-old car, and was looking at ads for Corollas, Hyundais etc. I encouraged her to go sporty and for about the same money we obtained a Peugot 208GTi (I'd always longed for the 205GTi back in the day. Leather interior, bling but quality trim, handles like a go-kart, 200hp, and suprisingly light on fuel. The most amazing thing is how pleasant it is in the rear seat (despite no opening windows). The French really do seem to have a knack for vehicle interiors, quirky or otherwise :)

when you mentioned it not liking low speeds in the car park that reminded me of my old BX. I'd find that navigating around car parks just feathering the throttle would just about result in throwing me through the windscreen if I lifted off the throttle completely. It was a tiny amount of travel but obviously the tired springs just allowed the throttle plate in the carb to snap shut quick enough to cause quite a shunt from the engine which was then transferred through the car. it didn't take me long to learn to control my low speed manouevres with the clutch thus preventing said shunt from being transmitted to the cabin. I then went and upgraded to a car with not only EFI but also a completely fly by wire throttle, which is just absolutely spoiling you in comparison if I'm honest. I like old cars for their charm, but also as a reminder of how far we've come.

My Dad had a yellow 305 with brown pleather seats. It must have been an early one as I remember ber it had bad rust on the arches. He had a later duck egg blue one and it had zero rust. So Peugeot must have got that sorted. Seeing the interior here is bringing back good memories.

I needed an estate car in a hurry, so I bought the first one I found. It happened to be to 305 estate. I was surprised how lively it turned out to be, sailing up the steepest lake district roads with ease. Turned out it had a lowered gear ration on the diff and a twin choke down draught Weber carb. It was a 'test bed' for the planned GTX series. A sports car in estate car clothing with acceleration to match and an ability to make easy work when fully loaded in the spacious cargo area.

I remember from a 305 that they had extremely rust-prone strut mounts. One day you would hit a bump and the strut would find its way up through the bonnet...

In those years all cars rusted. My dad had a 6 year old Opel kadett that had rusted through door sills. Dont let anybody fool you. Cars are alot better now. But they did have more charme.

That happened to the rear struts of my dad's 1980 305 SR on a then very bumpy stretch of A27 near Sleeuwijk, when it was only 7 years old. My sister and I were in the back and I still remember how it scraped the tarmac and of course, being driven home by a recovery truck! The 305 eventually got repaired and my dad kept using it locally for a couple of years, but a 1985 Volvo 360 GLS soon took over for use as a family car. Obviously this wouldn't happen to the horizontally placed rear springs of an Estate.

@@alphatrion100 the 305 had some special places to rust. ;) My 1986 Opel Kadett 1.6S had its rusty sills repaired when I bought it in 1996 and then the wheel arches went. A theft by a joyrider eventually killed the car. I needed a car so I bought a 1985 Peugeot 205 GLD for little money which had heaps of issues, a dreadful oil leak and one day it caught fire because of a short circuit, but it didn't rust at all and started even at -15 degrees! I have driven many Peugeots after that (106, 206, 307, 308) but none had so much "character" as the 205. I traded it in for a 1983 VW Golf CL Diesel (one of the last MkI) which was an utterly boring car to drive (nought to sixty... eventually) and it did rust.

One day we had to resort to welding the struts and shock absorbers in place, because the mounts were gone! We could have met those years on the A27, which we drove on frequently in the 1980s (also in the years before the A27 on local roads through places like Lexmond, Hei- en Boeicop, Vianen...)

This was the ultimate 305 - really good looking car. Never had one myself, but did have an '85 BX 19GT with the same engine. Amazing car, but the big Solex carb was a bloody nightmare on mine! Drove extremely well when it was behaving! Part exchanged it for a Rover Mini Cooper. Out of all the cars I've owned, these two would be my "If you could have some back" pair.

Had a 305 GLD estate as my first car. I toured Europe in it without a single problem. The rear seats can be removed (they slide off the mounts when you unscrew the nut completely) giving a huge load space. I used to sleep in mine when we went surfing.

I had one of these as well but cooking version. Very comfortable, tweed seats! It followed an Alfasud ti. Engine went bang after a few years. Put in new engine and sold it. In one of your recent videos you glanced at a Daewoo Espero. I found one of them for a son who at about 20 could insure it...only 1500cc. I made a tow bar for it (he races sailing dinghies). It was a good car until he hit a range rover....

Nice review as always! The only "Peugeot experience" I had was about 27 years ago; a friend had a 1981 505 sedan, turbo-diesel 2.3 liter, I think, and 3-sp. auto-box. It was probably about like driving a bus on acceleration; it oozed off the line, and "in a while", you realized you were going (pretty) fast. Engine ran well, but probably was down a glowplug or two, judging by the rattly, juddering startups from cold, accompanied by massive "clag"...Still, it was very comfortable, w/ those "living room-quality" front seats!

Always liked beer. As a kid our local taxi firm bought a load of new ones X Reg to go with their fleet of Talbot Tagoras. They Peugeots racked up huge more, got crashed and generally mistreated. Ohhhh I've been waiting for this one... Drove 305 vans for over 100,000 miles when working for multi franchise garage in Cumbria in the 80's. Faster than Sierra and Cavaliers of the time as well....at least mine was!! Your correct about the dash, the van had the row of warning lights on top and I believe just speedometer but no rev counter. Mine where the early E reg in red for David Hayton and white Peugeot Citroen and Motaquip livery for Ullswater Road Garage in Penrith and Woollies of Windermere...a crazy place to drive all day every day dealing with insurance damage, you got to see what happens to vehicles several times a day on the very roads you have to drive fast on yourself, Cumbria is a great tourist destination but a nightmare to navigate in summer because of the tourists and in the cold and wet it's an unforgiving place. The issues with the unhappiness at low speeds was something that continued into the 405 1.9 carb cars which were terrible in town to the point that they could coke up their spark plugs to the point where they would fail to proceed. There were also big issues with the 205 1.9 GTi which, in the earlier versions, really didn't get on with UK unleaded petrol to the point where some were rendered all but impossible to drive due to their misbehaviour... Now a very rare car and, I would imagine, incredibly so in top spec GTX trim as even when these were current the vast majority were in the very standard GL or GR spec, and a lot of diesels were in service with taxi companies all over the UK for a very long time as the bodies and interior trim could be quite fragile, in typically French fashion of the period, but the mechanics were almost immortal. A really nice, very usable "they used to be everywhere" car for an incredibly good price, even if it would benefit from a bit of love here and there. I'm sure the next owner will love and enjoy it immensely...

It may not surprise you to learn I've had three of these. A saloon and an estate in GTX form and a lowly GL Estate. Great cars.

The steering wheel is the same as that on the first 205 1.6GTI's. As indeed are the instruments... Even here in France you don't see many 305's around anymore which is a shame. Great review.

When cars were REAL cars ..Not the "Throw away" designed to last the warranty rubbish that we have today ... Mr HubNut..Next time you are driving or out and about ..Have a look at the cars on the road.. There are hardly ANY old cars on the road.. More and more people are buying a brand new car "on tic" keeping it 4 Years and then repeat the cycle... However I wish someone would tell these 2nd hand car dealers that new cars are cac and have not been designed to last ... If you buy a car you should only do one of two things 1) BRAND NEW and change it when it starts to be a pain 2) OLD BANGER ..£1000 mark and take a gamble on it ..If it "Blows up" walk away and buy another one. You do not want to be buying 2nd hand cars that are 6 and 7 Years old... Everything is about to go wrong with it ... Mainly electronic stuff that is hard to fault find.. The makers build this into the car .. Planned obsolete I think it is called. Sorry waffling a bit now Mr HubNut ... I heart cars .. The same as you do (Well not modern souless cac cars anyway)

We had a red 305 Plus from 1982 or thereabouts when I was a kid. It replaced a brown Saab 96. I always wondered what was so "Plus" about it, until I realized it was just a very base model with the small 1.3 liter engine. It suffered a head gasket failure and we got rid of it a couple years later. I hated that car back then, and would've much preferred a 205, but I can appreciate them now. Robust, practical and comfortable.
