same question here. In intermediate case, Energy = α and putting the value of alpha we get the value as zero. You have put the value of α only for intermediate state, not for other two states. In case if you don't put the values of α for the intermediate state: then for carbocation, energy = 2α+2(√2)β. For carboanion, energy = 3α+2(√2)β. For radical, energy = 4α+2(√2)β.
