Excellent Video as usual! The difference between Z and Y approaches, is that there can be 2 or more different straight in approaches to the same runway. They'll typically have different minimums, altitude limits on approach, and different holding patterns on missed. But, since they are all for the same runway, a letter is added at the end, starting from "Z" and going backwards in the alphabet to "S". Example might be RNAV (GPS) 13L-Z and RNAV (RNP) 13L -Y Slightly different equipment needed in the aircraft, and subtle changes to altitudes and holding on missed etc... Also, Don't add flaps, until you're inside the white color on the right of the speed tape. The white zone indicates safe for flaps. LOL Hope that helps! :-)
@Huddison3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Aces for the explanation between the Z & Y approaches (I was too lazy to look that up :D). Re flaps: I know about the white marker on the speed tape, but I've heard varying reports of what speeds are safe for the first stage of flaps etc - many (sim and real world pilots) will say under 100 knots is ok for the first stage; others like yourself (and actually many manuals relating to the C172), will say wait until the speed hits the white zone (or around 80 knots) of the speed ribbon. I go with my guts as after all, it is a Sim 😎😉
@AcesDwn13 жыл бұрын
@@Huddison So true! It is a sim.. And there is truth to varying reports. After all, the "Specs" are what the manual "Says" you can do, but you know it's conservative. So just outside the white zone "Should" be fine in reality. Sim is the perfect place to do it for sure! :-)

After learning this it makes the sim a real joy to fly, thanks for sharing to everyone so they to can have a nice enjoyable experience, also if anyone wants to just depart from a airport and fly around the town and come back to the same airport and land, this rnav works for this to, just go to proc in the g1000 and follow the prompt select rnav arrival then activate, then the cdi will appear with the runway, then when I get up to altitude I switch to loc1 setup my altitude select autopilot, then I fly around with my heading, then when you want to land bring up the gps cdi to see where u are at in relation to the runway and then go to it, its alot of fun

Haven't tried an RNAV approach yet so found this interesting. I'm not instrument rated but I believe the glideslope/path should be intercepted from below. I would imagine that in the absence of an auto-throttle, some power should come off immediately the final descent starts and I noticed that you were very fast at that stage. Never knew where Twickenham was so learning something new everyday !
@Huddison3 жыл бұрын
You are correct: the Glideslope/path should be intercepted from below - MSFS has a strange way of showing the interception currently, as it shows the Indicator diamond coming up from the bottom, rather than the top.

Thanks for these instructive videos! Can you explain what's the difference between ILS and RNAV and why should we select one instead of the other?
@Huddison2 жыл бұрын
Essentially: RNAV is typically GPS/satellite based, whilst ILS is entirely ground based. It's often down to availability: what is your aircraft equipped with and the airports themselves etc. Most (it seems) prefer to choose ILS if it is available to them.

Ok, ready for a really dumb question? I have logged 100 hours on MSFS 2020 and gained some confidence in landing and IFR flying but I can’t figure out how to do a very basic thing on the Garmin 1000 system: Switching between #1 and #2 radios. I know you press the tuning knobs to accomplish that, but I can’t seem to it with my mouse. I can switch active channels because my cursor turns into a pointing finger when I hover over the double arrow but when I move to the tuning knob the cursor becomes an open palm for adjusting the tuning. What am I doing wrong? Couldn’t have anything to do with the fact I am using a wireless mouse, could it?
@Huddison3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what's going wrong for you there, as I've just tried it in the C172 and it works as it should 🤔. Are you part of the Discord Leonard? Aces would be a great person to help sort this one out for you. Btw: do you have the G1000 NXI mod installed?

@@Huddison So, which one is best for people to use?
@Huddison3 жыл бұрын
@@xjay1234 It's up to personal preference and dependant on the airport's capabilities (i.e. if it has ILS or not).
@daneav82 жыл бұрын
@@xjay1234 Hello, I fly professionally and I hope this helps. As Huddison said below, it just depends on several things including aircraft equipment capability, airport approach options (some smaller and maybe more remote airports may not have a ground-based ILS system...so only RNAV/GPS approaches are available), the minimum descent altitude ("Minimums") allowed by each approach (if the weather is really low, then you would want to pick an approach that offers the lowest minimums and therefore the best chance of seeing the runway), and finally pilot preference (some choose an RNAV over an ILS because the Missed Approach segments are typically less complex for example). Also, the airport may have both ILS and RNAV approaches, but the particular day you are there the ILS is down for maintenance (it is a ground based system requiring periodic service), therefore RNAV is your only choice. There are other reasons, but this covers some of the most common.
