wow, this is amazing! drum n bass makes so much more sense now :) i love the idea he explains of how the beat can be displaced so much by the fact that its like a phrase just being played again and again, beginning on different random beats of the bar, like someone is just pressing the button over and over at different times

I never like this kind of music, untill I heard Mayer play it. He brings a whole new method to this style of drumming and as a result as made a whole new kind of drumming. One word brilliant.

jojo mayer is IMO, one of the best drummers alive. skill, a really good attitude, and doesnt limit himself to one style of music/drumming.... he's simply amazing.

Jojo tops them all in my book. He has great ergonomics, a master's level of precision, speed and creative limb independence. Buddy was incredible in so many ways but Jojo is taking the kind of style Buddy laid out to a higher level, equals his speed and grooves like hell. I'm not knocking any of the greats because there's so many I admire. I just haven't seen anyone with an astonishingly broad, multidimensional skill set as Jojo.

Jojo Mayer is the most talented drum set player ALIVE. I have no doubt of that. Extremely talented. He maked those drums sing a beautiful melody. Ridiculous technique, marching snare influenced tricks, beautiful moeller, great around the kit, great from both a visual and musical stand point. The guy is a beast.

In my opinion. Jojo has become the best drummer of all time. He's taken everything that the greats like Buddy Rich, and Tony Williams, etc. have done in the past and brought drumming to a whole new level. It's truly amazing. I guarantee that if you told him to play any random style of music off the top of your head, that he could do it.

holy shit this guys an animal. He has such a great outlook on drumming and this lesson as well as every other video ive seen with him just shows how versatile he is as a drummer. That bit around 4:00 where he plays and repeats different sections of the same pattern is incredible. Thats what precision is

I will vaguely agree that it is a mix of musics from many places, but looking at the basics, it was the mix of the blues (from slave music) and ragtime (a very american development from classical music) that specifically influenced jazz the most, and the people who really first started playing jazz like buddy bolden, jelly roll morton, joe oliver, louie armstrong, etc. were all american without exception. No one played jazz outside the U.S. until the 30's

He stays relaxed and focused. When a professional drummer looks like he is sturggling it's usually part of the act, they all train themselves to play with the least amount of effort.

@shortbuspileup Whoa, dude! That's a big ask - I reckon I could get the Amen down (not as good as the record, obviously), but I've been working on Funky Drummer for years - the one handed 16ths and all the ghost notes, open hihats etc. make it so much more complicated than it sounds!

this video really helped me in learning breakbeat a few years ago one thing jojo never plays is some trip hop. for those who dont know what that is, trip hop is basically like down tempo break beat, sort of like drum and bass at 90bpm. it uses the same break language but that slow shuffle staggers the beat and messes it up and, as jojo said, creates a new framework for creativity and improvisation. breakbeaters out there, incorporate some trip hop into your jam sessions, its healthy.

@Destrolyer That's actually a difficult question to answer. Jazz drummers cant pull off some Blackmetal or Extreme metal songs while metal drummers can't pull off Buddy Rich stuff. Post-metal drummers are very underrated. I suggest taking a look at Russian Circles, preferably the songs Campaign, Harper Lewis, or Geneva.
