Huévar del Aljarafe is a municipality in the province of Sevilla, Andalusia, Spain. It is located about 30 km from the provincial capital.2 It belongs to the Aljarafe region.3 It is in the basin of the Guadiamar river.
In the documents of the thirteenth century it is mentioned as Huévar, Güebar or Uévar. According to tradition, the name comes from an Almohad wali named Al-Güebar, who could have ruled the kingdom of Niebla in the thirteenth century, although there is no documentary evidence of this fact.
In the place there must have been a Roman settlement, for the capitals, marble shafts and found ceramic vessels. Remains of a Christian temple of the Visigothic period have also been found. It is in the Visigothic period that the city called Erbas was probably created. Later, this place became a Muslim farmhouse dedicated to agriculture with olive groves and fig trees. All the region was reconquered by Ferdinand III in the mid-thirteenth century. In the repartimiento of earth realized shortly after by Alfonso X the monarch reserved almost all the zone of this town for the Crown. Later it was donated to the Castilian sailor Ramón Bonifaz and to some men who had fought with him.
