This vet always gives the best attention to what he is doing. He finds the abscess, shaves the area, washes and rinses the area gives the animal a pain and antibiotics shot before starting the procedure. Just when you think he is through he washes out the cyst area and cleans out the sac then drenches a drainage cloth with medication and inserts the cloth strip before he is finished. He is a great vet and a treat to watch him work. God bless you for all your good works.

I've watched a few videos involving animals and I don't understand why they aren't given numbing medicine before their eyes abscesses or cysts are lanced and drained. This has to be painful for these animals and I feel badly for how they must endure these procedures (especially the cutting) without the consideration that people are given! What is up with that?
@debyzimmerman66175 жыл бұрын
Still wondering why you are allowed to drain anything on these animals when you do not put forth any effort to COMPLETELY numb the affected area and as LOW DOWN as possible for total drainage. You cut high enough to leave a type of pocket that can start the problem all over again!!!

Also the abscess can have many pockets and since its quite large the scissors don't reach to the other side. So to fully drain the site, multiple incisions are needed. Also there could be more than just the abscess itself

Animal appear to be in pain. I saw him and Jack something at the beginning but I didn't see any local anesthesia. Maybe this is a shortened version of the original video. Could be that they cut two holes so they could insert the drain, or perhaps it had to separate cyst going on. I have seen this vet do other procedures and was very impressed with his technique and the care he gave the animal. Other videos seem to be more Humane than this one. Perhaps the pain medicine didn't work because of the level of infection.

On this video however I did not see any cleaning of the location that he gave the vein injection which I'm not sure if this is a common practice and I did not see him administer the lidocane prior to cutting the wound. I noticed there were several breaks in the video and I am thinking that maybe it was done in between filming.

First, that back leg should have been hobbled to prevent injury to the vet and to prevent mistakes when the cow moves while trying to open the cyst. Second, that incision should have been lower and made much quicker and with more confidence, not all those tiny, hesitant cuts. Not impressed.

Why are cows so prone to (or "predisposed" to may be a better description) these huge accesses? What causes them?

+somermiller I'm assuming because of the growth hormones pumped into them in order to produce such mass amounts of milk.

Lo I disagree. It’s probably more that the antibiotics they feed these animals regularly impact the immune system in the LONG RUN. Short-term solution over long-term health. And if your cow IS eating antibiotics constantly, but still gets abscesses like this - then effing DUH! The animal’s immune system has CLEARLY become antibiotic resistant.

I don't think this is a vet. He must have been using a dull razor or just a plain knife because you shouldn't have to cut a small incision 6 or more times just to open it. Then he puts it in a weird area. It should be at the bottom so gravity will help, it drains down not sideways. This just wasn't done well.
@shadowenwalker16837 жыл бұрын
Cows have supper thick skin and be put the hole were the infection felt closest to the surface. Gravity does not come into play when they deal with abscesses, pressure and depth does. They put a packing in and that draws the fluid out to the surface and then gravity may get involved but mostly air flow.
@windwoman35495 жыл бұрын
Shadowen Walker 1. OF COURSE gravity comes into it. The laws of physics still do their thing - unless that cow goes into outer space . . . and somehow I doubt it. 2. Yes - packing absorbs gunk, but the point is to keep the wound OPEN so drainage can continue. 3. It’s not necessary to pop an abscess of this size where it “seems” closest to the surface (remember how “super thick” cow skin is?) It’s obvious that the entire thing was infectious material, & if you notice, they probe deeply into the wounds looking for separate pockets ANYWAY. A lot of vets confronted with a huge abscess like that WOULD have chosen to pop it lower down on the animal.
@daspooterman4 жыл бұрын

@windwoman35495 жыл бұрын
I know, right? My former father-in-law was a cattle rancher. It seems like a lot of big-animal vets AND owners don’t care much about the comfort of the cows because they’re just $$$ on 4 legs. More $ out, less profit for the owner. And the vet is DEFINITELY going to do what the owner wants because they’re making a living, too! If he/she insisted on adequate pain relief, the owner will just find a vet who’ll do it their way. Even understanding the dynamics, I’m not going to watch any more of this vet’s videos. He’s careless about stuff that certainly doesn’t cost more - like PUTTING A BUCKET UNDER THE ANIMAL TO CATCH ALL THAT PUS/BLOOD/INFECTED MATERIAL! Letting it run out onto the ground (in the BARN, even worse) is just lazy & stupid. Now he, the animals, & other people are going to be tromping through it, spreading bacteria everywhere. Unbelievable.
