Inside the Beast: The Caterpillar 6040 Hydraulic Excavator in Action
Today, we had the chance to watch one of the biggest hydraulic excavators in the world, the Caterpillar 6040, in action at a coal mine. This powerful machine, with its immense reach and capacity, is hard at work moving overburden-layers of earth and rock that sit above coal seams. Clearing this overburden is the first crucial step in accessing the coal, and the 6040 is uniquely suited to handle this demanding job. Watching from the operator’s view, we got a close-up look at how the machine is operated and how effortlessly it performs in such a high-stakes environment.
A Look from the Operator’s View
Sitting in the operator’s seat of the Caterpillar 6040 offers a perspective like no other. From here, it’s clear how finely tuned this machine is, with controls that allow the operator to maneuver its massive hydraulic arm and bucket precisely, even when moving tons of material in each scoop. The operator has full visibility of the loading area and dump trucks waiting to be filled, allowing them to perform a perfectly timed sequence of loading and unloading that keeps the operation flowing smoothly.
Watching this process up close is captivating. The Caterpillar 6040 is designed for efficiency and ease of control, and the operator’s movements are intuitive-each lever and pedal guiding the machine’s immense arm and bucket to dig deep, scoop massive quantities of rock, and deposit it into the waiting dumpers with absolute precision.
Machine Specifications: Caterpillar 6040 Hydraulic Excavator
The Caterpillar 6040 is a standout in the world of heavy machinery. Here are some specs that make it one of the giants in mining:
Operating Weight: Around 400 tons, making it capable of handling even the toughest material without strain.
Engine Power: Dual engines, each providing around 1,200 horsepower, for a combined total of approximately 2,400 horsepower.
Bucket Capacity: Up to 22 cubic meters, allowing it to scoop enormous quantities of material in one pass.
Max Digging Depth: Approximately 8 meters, giving it a reach deep enough to handle significant layers of overburden with ease.
These specifications mean that the Caterpillar 6040 can handle intense workloads at high speed, maximizing productivity at mining sites.
A Perfect Partnership: Loading the Hitachi Euclid EH3500 Dump Trucks
The Caterpillar 6040’s work doesn’t end with scooping and lifting. It also needs to load its haul efficiently into equally capable transport: the Hitachi Euclid EH3500 dump trucks. Together, these two machines create a seamless workflow. As the Caterpillar 6040 scoops up rock and debris, the EH3500 dump trucks line up in a steady rotation, ready to take on the load and haul it to designated areas, where it can be moved or relocated as needed.
The EH3500 trucks complement the Caterpillar 6040 perfectly, with specs that match the excavator’s massive output:
Payload Capacity: Around 200 tons, so each truck can carry a large volume of material in one trip.
Engine Power: Approximately 1,500 horsepower, enough to transport heavy loads quickly and efficiently.
Hauling Speed: Capable of reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h, even with a full load, allowing for fast transport from dig sites to disposal areas.
This pairing of Caterpillar 6040 and Hitachi Euclid EH3500s ensures that the coal mine operates like a well-oiled machine. Each scoop of overburden removed by the 6040 is immediately hauled away by the EH3500s, clearing space quickly and keeping the coal seam accessible.
The Power and Precision of Modern Mining
Watching the Caterpillar 6040 work alongside the EH3500 dump trucks offers an impressive look at the power, scale, and precision of modern mining machinery. From the operator’s view, we see firsthand how these machines turn what would be an impossible task for humans alone into an efficient, high-powered operation.

Larry Tassinari very nice. I got my multi in an aztruck. I would like to own one. My son is about ready to take his CFI and he might have a job instructing. I have to visit our training center this Saturday for landing currency. I’ll be happy to “ fly “ anything at this point. I’m almost retired Larry, I have five years until mandatory feather clipping with the airlines, but I wonder if my airline will still be around.

40000 hours for such a big engine is nothing , the bigger it is the slower it appears but in fact is much more eficient , this is a 450 tons machine with 2032 hp twin engine and 44 tons bucket payload , if one engine stop working it can still get 65% done with one engine
@christopherlovelock9104
@christopherlovelock9104 5 жыл бұрын
@@dragossorin85 - With a lot of people having probably never seen one of these machines (or the trucks they work with) up close, I don't think they realise the immense size, height and all the other mind blowing features since they are always seen in the open. The operator sits 22' approx above the ground, a 2,000+ gal fuel tank - enough for 1 days work, - plus the cost of them - pushing the $2,000,000 mark, that's without the cost of those 200 ton haul trucks ($1,000,000 each) then you find the companies like their operators to take that extra care of their machines and as you say it has now been just about been "run in" NOT "run down".

Arm chair athletes are awesome... The machine is a 200t shovel doing a strip.... I timed a couple trucks - about 3min20sec per cycle - so he can do upwards of 20 trucks an hour. Assuming those trucks are 777s (and not 785s) he is moving 2000t/hour - not too bad, and if 785s then it is 3000t/hr, thats even better for payout. I do have 2 minor complaints though (if I were the shift boss); I would like to see: 1) his bench about 4' higher(he should be able to drive into back of truck from his bench) - this mighten even be possible depending on ground conditions 2) assuming he was using 777 (and not 785) he was using a 5 dip loadout out. So, I'd like to try to get down to a 3-4 dip loadout

Awesome video thanks! Is there something wrong with this machine or is the operator new or something? Everything is so slow! He’s also waiting almost as long for a truck to back up as it takes to load it!... just wondering......
@dalepeterson5609
@dalepeterson5609 5 жыл бұрын
If the operator passes his performance to that of the availability of the trucks then he doesn't have to push the machine as hard, extending the life of the machine.

Maybe the dump site is far from the cut, maybe they don't have enough trucks to have one there waiting. Also the machine is very old and very big which is why it is so slow. Go work in a mine or on a mass grading project and you'll understand what you're talking about.

It's cheaper to connect hoses directly to the cylinders at this position, than to put a lot of needed pipework in addition if the cylinders where turned 180 degrees

Progress will go on but its no wonder all the plates in the earth move around with all the land mass being moved and the big city's building up i can see how all the weight would tilt and move a section of earth one way or the other i would speculate a majority of the earth quacks and volcanoes are contributed to this along with all the drilling mining !
