Captive elephants are ALWAYS tortured and beaten before they become obedient to humans, and many of the elephants used in these festivals are subjected to years and years of abuse and neglect. The suffering they go through just to appear in these festivals is immense. Please research cases such as Thiruvambadi Ramabhadran before attending these festivals.

Pumpkin8881 so what u said may be something happening 3-4 percent of elephant , and most of them r cared well and given special treatment.ok let me ask u a thing can u tell that if we send all these elephants to forest will all will be there alive, all would be killed for tusks, in India about 70 percent of elephants have disappeared from firsts if This elephamta were there we couldn't see it .try to know before always pointing the wrong side,
