did you see the security cam video of this train 20 miles from East Palastine . The wheels were on fire on a covered hopper as it went bye the cam, so it looks like a defect with the hot box detector or the crew did not pick up the hot box recording. This train should of been stopped miles from where it derailed in east Palastine
@lorenzocassias5981 Жыл бұрын
The NTSB stated that the crew got a warning from the defect detector, and then an emergency brake was application was initiated. Could that have been the cause of the derailment, the train going in to emergency? Not sure if that means the engineer put the train in emergency or the train went in to emergency because of the derailment.
@Railroad_TalkNOutdoors Жыл бұрын
I believe if I remember correctly the operating rules are something along the lines of it the detector detects something wrong with the train they must stop the train safely. My initial assumption is the detector went off and before the engineer could stop the train the correct way the train derailed and cause the train to go into emergency. I could be complete wrong this is just me speculating. We should know something within 4-6 weeks.

If this had been a 'One Man Crew' think of the lost time the engineer would have wasted tying four locomotive handbrakes(as required by rule) and 'Isolating' each locomotive before getting off the locomotives. It would have delayed him significantly in getting safely to the derailment area to report what railcars were derailed, on fire, and what the contents were based on his 'Train List' or 'Manifest.' It would have delayed important information to the 'First Responders'.

Wow, can’t believe my assumption was correct 🤣. I have seen one first hand screaming hot and it doesn’t take much to catch the brake shoes, the oil from the greasers, you also have plastic bushings that keep the brake rigging from hitting metal to metal (forgot the correct term, been years since I was a carman) a lot of stuff that can catch fire near those wheels.

True, 1st on scene in any situation. People just don't know the prepping that goes on before we take over a train. We, the Conductors, are responsible for the way the train is built even when we take over the train on the line of road. We have to job brief dispatchers on how many engines and cars we have. Do we have sufficient power for the tonnage of train. What train restrictions do we have, and are we a key train. We also let the dispatcher know if there are any problems with the way the train is built. We are held accountable if any of the above are incorrect.

Nevermind the profits. Exceptionally dangerous loads like this should be in their own extra trains to keep them shorter and safer. Also, it's possible the defect detectors were too far apart here. Last, RRs should reintroduce the caboose.

Carman are suppose to inspect railcars before they leave the terminal, however carman are most times rushed to get the inspection done get the hoses laced and brake test done. In reality this is a super time consuming task but carriers care about one thing, money. I bet a lot of carman on this channel have been told not to bad order a car many times due to how long it takes to switch out a car due to the length of trains and what’s all involved with getting a bad order railcar out.

Every railroad is currently trying to cut cost and it makes me sick. UP cant even get lease locomotives from GE anymore because they run the damn things to the dirt and dont maintain them so yea why would we lease you something you are gonna destroy. This same mentality trickles down to the cars and other equipment as well, sending cars out on trains with moon crater sized flat spots, paper thin flanges, shit bearings that havent been serviced for who knows how long, and old ass rusted knuckles that are gonna break when you set an eot on them(i know they wont really break from an eot its just a joke but you get the idea) of course something like this is bound to happen again and again. I get it not every car can be serviced on time but damn atleast make an attempt to service the equipment with our lives being on the line. Literally last night "hey this unit goes dead at midnight tonight", "itll be ok just run it and itll get serviced at the next destination".....LIES AS FUCK because its gonna get put on the next train as a dead bad unit and each maintenance facility is gonna play ping pong with it because nobody wants to fix it! And coincidentally the 4th unit in the same consist was dead bad because it blew up the crank case, see the trend here. But hey im just a nobody like the rest of us that are threatening to get kicked out the cab so what do i know lol.
