There is a massive munitions factory and maintained storage facility just west north west of the refinery. Plus a massive military training facility a little further in the same direction. Ukraine isn't finished this area yet.

Methinks the following is always happening: 1) Ukrainian drones flying towards a different target (not the refineries or oil depots) 2) AA defence incidentally intercepting all drones just as they are overflying the refineries/depots 3) Debris falling onto the compound (not starting any fires though) 4) Incident personnel arrives to clear all the debris 5) After they have done their work in safely clearing away the debris they get their well-earned cigarette break. 6) Due to carelessness in disposing of the butts, they start those fires.

I doubt it. US already froze all outgoing aid and all indications seems to be that the west will be pressuring Ukraine to give russia whatever it's already occupying. Of course putin and trump can negotiate all they want, we will be fighting the russians as long as we can. US is capable of making sure we can't fight for too long though. So in the end russia is likely coming out of this with about 6 million new second-class citizens to exploit and mineral rich lands to exploit them on. And the immediate lifting of all sanctions and immense cash flow from all the human-rights focused anti-corruption democracies of the west that just want some cheap oil and gas. As much as it makes my skin crawl, this looks like a win for russia. Thanks, the West, they couldn't have done it without you.

Interesting change in Ukraine's strategy in these attacks on Russia's oil infrastructure. In the earlier strikes last year, Ukraine seemed to be targeting the production/refining infrastructure with specific focus on things like the distillation towers at the refineries. Now they are hitting the larger storage tanks/areas. They also seem to be hitting the sites with more drones per attack. Not clear whether the altered/expanded nature of these recent attacks is driven by strategic/tactical decisions or whether the change has just been enabled by improved drone technology and expanded supplies of the longer range drones.

What amuses me about it - one of the things that amuses me about it - is that russia tried to blockade Ukraine's grain and blow up its port, to create an export crises in an important commodity for Ukraine...yet despite russia being so much bigger and more powerful, they failed.
