I absolutely love your content! I was a chef in northern Michigan for ten yrs ,our restaurant bought fresh morels every season. I caught the bug to hunt and ill never quit! Its a weird breed,in northern mi you look for ash trees and always find em,but down in the Detroit metro area they make no sense ,grow by pines ,elm,oak cant figure em out. Your crew is solid,lots of experience.

Thanks for the awesome comment. Yeah, morels continue to surprise us every year. Usually there’s similar patterns to follow in the burn, but every so often we see them growing in a place you would least expect them.

Do you consider soil temperatures when timing out your scouting? You said at the end of this video it was super cold. I hear people say you should be looking for 50 degree soil temp or a little warmer but then there are always exceptions. Wonderful videos. Thanks for all you guys do. Gearing up for morel season in California.

Yes soil temps are a major factor. Randy has been sticking the soil thermometer in the ground for nearly 4 decades getting data. Different species align with different soil temps. Sometimes an early heatwave will start baby morels that can then be hit by cold spell, which can stunt the early flush of Morchella sextelata. In the Yukon, a rare situation can occur some years where the weather suddenly switches from below freezing to sudden summer temps. When this happens, we’ve seen the mycelium completely skip the M. sextelata & M. eximia and go straight into flushing greys and greens. That didn’t occur last season but when that happens we believe it’s because of soil temps, along with 24 hrs of daylight in the far north, also being a factor.

@@northernwildharvest Thank you for your thorough and informative response! Morels are so fascinating. Both Predictable and unpredictable. Each species having their own unique preferences for fruiting conditions. This will be my first year taking a thermomiter spike into the bush. We are getting our first burn/logging morels in between 1100ft and 4500ft right now. Quite a range. So many microclimates and or differences in soil, exposure, trees, burn intensity, logging activity, and much more! I have a lot to learn. Thanks again guys really appreciate yall!

Hi, it's good to see you are all well. Before you know it it'll be full steam ahead. I truly hope that this year will be exceptional for you all. Good thing you did for Randy, he seemed chuffed. Nice trick with the marble Phil, I'm sure it is keeping you cozy. Thankyou for the video. Bye for now, God bless and keep you safe.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell if doing this is aging us or keeping us feeling young - probably a bit of both 😅we like doing it either way! Thanks Helen, hope you are well.

We had planned to go back once they grew more. Day was cut short by that cold front otherwise we would have had more time to pick that area. It nearly snowed that night!

Why would you use those big pruning shears to cut morels. I've picked commercial for 9 years and never seen anyone use pruners.a knife cuts alot faster.
@northernwildharvest8 ай бұрын
Nothing wrong with using a knife, I used one for years. Was using the secateurs while cutting trails one day, lost my knife. Picked with my pruners and found all my cuts were perfectly flush, wrist wasn’t as sore and I wasn’t picking any slower plus they’re a tool for getting branches out of my way

@northernwildharvest cool.were just starting to get burn morels in Washington state. You guys in Canada got all the big burns to pick this year.just small fires in United States. Hope I can get my 1000 lbs goal.

It’s getting to be that time. Good luck this season, hope you load up! Best patch the old guy in our group has seen in over 35 years, was on a small burn of around 400 hectares, so you just never know

We watch people get lost every year, or in some cases worse. Can't be too careful
@randym89638 ай бұрын
Agree Phil, over the years its cost me tens of thousands of dollars searching for and sometimes finding people who had a flippant attitude towards bush safety. On that note, lets take a moment to remember those that never made it out... may they rest in peace (there are many) We often don't even know until we find there unmoved vehicles. @northernwildharvest
