Dear Anne, as always, conversations with you are enlightening and sober. I am wondering if you see any light at the end of Trump’s presidency. As a refugee from the Soviet Union, I see nothing but deterioration of civic norms and the rule of law as well as rampant corruption as the future of America. I am looking for a glimpse of hope for a better outcome.
@CurtOntheRadio13 сағат бұрын
Not Anne, but I agree with you, we're seeing diminishing hope (as in lowered likelihood of desirable outcomes). I don't see any way out. What would need change - the content of men's heart? Possible, I suppose, but unlikely. I imagine AA would speak of the example of Poland, that the political traffic isn't all one way and things can (and have) been done to recover the situation.

Ordinary people are unhappy with the rate of progress, and now inflation is bursting out again. The Presidential election in May could be very close, and PiS are trying to get Trump and Orban will help them (e.g. by buying out through their billionaire friends the only non-PiS-controlled commercial TV network, which cash-strapped Warner Bros. Discovery wants to sell).

Anne Applebaums's insights come from the fact that not only does she know the land of her birth, America, so well, but with most of her adult life spent in Central and Eastern Europe she has learned so much about the people in different societies. Whether digging deep in the KGB archives of Moscow or restoring a manor in the Polish countryside, she has gained a uniquely broad and profound understanding of human nature in many situations, seeing the quest for power close up for well over thirty years. A great American-Polish investigator, journalist and writer.

During my childhood in South America, I heard the elders in my family, and our social circle say "what we need in this country is a strong hand, a strong man to control the population, because this is what they understand." I am realizing that this is what most people believe and are now saying in the US. It is ignorance, or at minimum a very poor education. The powers in many dictatorships are the oligarchs, the church and the military. The powers in the US are the 1% billionaires, the evangelicals and the military. Sad state of affairs. We spend a quarter of our annual federal budget on defense and only 3% on education. Trump is going to eliminate the Department of Education.

The thing that always baffles me about these ultra rich that can’t seem to get enough money is that they clearly understand how money works but can’t seem to understand that if the rest of us can’t afford to buy their stuff then the economy collapses. Their greed will lead to the collapse of our country

Anne , Jason Stanley, Ruth Ben Ghiat , Timothy Snyder, need to be platformed everywhere, they have studied how this happened in history in the 1930s and current day in other countries and predicted how it would look here

I'm not sure how many people have paid attention to the cult of personality that musk developed over a decade or so. I wasn't really aware of it until the Thailand submarine stunt.

His companies (aside from Twitter) are doing much better because he's too busy memeing to interfere in their daily operation.

I had a discussion about Musk with two family members in 2021. Both are employed in tech, both believed he was a kind of superman who could do no wrong. I had had no interest in the man until the cave rescue, when his behavior was shockingly childish and disgusting. After that, I couldn't respect him or give him the benefit of the doubt. It only got worse from there.

Anyone that thinks Leon is a genius should talk to a space x worker. 😂 He's not allowed to touch anything. He inherited his money which allowed him to buy other peoples ideas and staff the company's with very qualified people. He's NOT a smart guy. 😂

I think he's smart, but also crazy (cognitively impaired) at the same time. I ddin't see his immense danger until he got involved with Donald.
