Welcome to another Team MooseMan video and Moose & Coffee! We’ve only been home a month since leaving the 2022 Alaska moose rut behind, but it’s been a busy month for sure. Our new team member has been over the top fun to work with and we’re busy planning adventures for 2023. I’ve noticed strong support and gratitude from so many of you lately, and it’s really wonderful what we have built here together. Thank you to each and every one of you.
Today’s M&C video is intense. Bull Moose Head Wagging! What is head wagging anyway? As two bulls prepare to fight for mating rights, the huge animals will sway their head back and forth while advancing toward their opponent or in many cases while heading toward higher ground prior to fighting. A bull that positions himself on higher ground may have an advantage over a bull that is lower. As they walk, bulls wag their antlers back and forth in an attempt to display their racks and perhaps trying to make their antlers look bigger than they actually are. Bulls often stop briefly and slowly twist and tilt their head to show their opponent the full width of their headgear. It is absolutely amazing to watch! And you get to see lots of bulls head wagging in this morning’s video.
Lately we’ve had Libby doing a “voiceover” narrating the clips quite a bit, and we’ll do more of that but for this one…sit back and enjoy the show. Keep in mind head wagging does not always lead to a fight, but more often than not it does. Here are the bulls listed as they appear. Boris, Son of KJ, Mismatch, 22 vs Left Hook, Mr T vs Chantler, Jake, Left Hook vs Swagger, Swagger vs Chantler, Grumpy, Grumpy & Mismatch, Son of KJ vs Jake, Slew vs Pointdexter, and ending with Grumpy vs MisMatch.
Thanks for watching our channel, we are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part time Alaska.) It is our passion to document wildlife of any kind, but moose are definitely at the top. In New Hampshire we spend a lot of our spring/summer hours in kayaks photographing loons and moose in the waters of New Hampshire. And hike many miles in Alaska seeking all manner of wildlife in the fall.
