I'm building a new home and I'm planning on using the UDM Pro with a USW-Pro-24-POE. Also going to go with Ubiquiti AP AC PRO and some G4 Pro Cameras. They're pre wiring the camera locations for me and I'll have 2 drops to each room in the house. Do you think 24 ports will be enough? I think 48 might be too many.

Like @Max D sad, really wondering about your move to unifi consumer line. Sure looks nice and fancy but super limited functionality. I am running pfsense and edges witches with unifi APs. Sure I have to manage three separate controller systems, but that's worth.

Thanks! I am leaning towards tighter integration over complexity. I don’t have a strong networking background (although some) and would rather not learn and manage 3 systems. I totally get it for those who do have that background and experience. I would just rather spend that time on developing software and creating content... for now 😀

More advanced routers/gateways are unnecessary for home or even small office set-ups. The control over all of the networking devices from the one interface with Unifi is just beautiful. Also, if you're upgrading from a typical consumer grade all-in-one router then the Unifi routers and switches are certainly not limited in functionality by comparison!

I love the patch panels. I was reading some of the comments on Amazon about this Panel. Do you think that the edges need to be smoothed down on it ? Or that the wires "might" become damaged, from the rough edges ? Upgrades: Newer servers. My Dell R-610 has seen better days.

I saw those too. Maybe they've fixed this since those comments. I ran my fingers over it a few times and didn't notice anything sharp. I am also not using the cable manager the way they suggest.

Very interesting, I just upgraded to the UDM Pro, USW-24-POE and a US-16-150W at my home. I had replaced some Meraki gear that I got as an eval, and Cisco refused to give me an new eval license, so after 3 years, it was time to try something new. I had a similar SG200-24P as well. Now my network is a lot speedier with 3 UAP-AC-HDs, 1 UAP-NanoHD, 1 UAP-AC-Pro and 1 U6-lite. Also used all Cat 8 Patch cable.

Question, in every networking course I have taken and the projects I have worked on in State Datacenters require 3 foot or 1 m ethernet cables to reduce noise and interference. This was recommended by most of our architects also, which is usually why you'll see a runner U separating 2 switches with cables tracking back in combs. How well does your system work for home use so I can clean up my projects.

I also just installed a similar UDMP plus PoE switch setup and hit the same issue you mentioned in the video - the UDMP came preinstalled with an old 5.X version of the Unifi Controller and the little display on the front of the UDMP insisted (incorrectly) that this was the latest version. It was a pain to force the UDMP to update the controller version but without doing so you can't migrate from your existing 6.X Unifi controller because it doesn't support migration from a newer controller version to an older controller version. Ubiquiti really should focus on fixing this since it leaves a bit of a bad first impression of the UDMP. I also almost immediately hit another weird issue where the web UI IP addresses oscillate between old IP address and new IP address if you change the DHCP range for your LAN. A reboot seems to solve the issue but it makes me think that Ubiquiti is not testing this product very thoroughly.

Get a basic managed router or switch and start playing with it. Start with Ubiquity EdgeRouter X which is $60 in the US. Then get an old computer and an extra network card and build yourself a pfsense or opnsense firewall appliance. You'll be all set from there on.

I changed my network about a lot recently. I took away my switch. While I can use all 24 ports, I generally don't need to. So I got a little trend 1gb switch, it's got five ports and zero management. I then put in CNA cards (10gbs) as they were dual port .... But I have a LAN cat6, and SFP+ cable running to my work station. To my rack and the hub. I removed the home plug (data over power cables) which ended up running a cable out the window to make a i link to the server rack switch. I pulled but have moved it up to my office, i a small hp managed switch,. 8port. Which I used to run my server management links over a vlan. The "go to" VMS has good connections with a ten g and one g and I am piped to one of the four g lans which works fine. I've only two free cables, so I may go back to the physical separate networks. And if I run all systems I'll need to switch over to running the rack switch. But I've lowered the powered devices. Also... I'm one of those guys that mount Lan switches in the rear of the rack. I can't stand the wires at the front. But there is alot more to be done.... AI/ml, was thinking of Jarvis.. I've added some nests... But they need work... So thinking of self dev. Have some Dev boards and robot parts as well as some speakers and microphones... And plenty of server space and power. I'm yet to run out Poe. Though I have the hardware it maybe limited to cameras only. Nests do call and broadcast; so it makes phones redundant.

Nice upgrade man! That UDM-Pro is such a good all-in-one and for less than getting the individual systems from Ubiquiti. I've been using clear power supply cable combs to keep my cable runs parallel and organized on the front. Those monoprice slimruns fit perfectly inside the standard cable combs.

currently got the USG gateway to a ubiquiti 24 port 500 watt poe switch, unifi switch in the garage 8-150poe. 3 unifi AP pros and various cameras. Reason for the POE in the house was for Raspberry PI 4 running kobi for the plex server. best little trick ive done just to clear the clutter behind the tv. Need to run some cat5 into the bedroom for pi on the bedrrom tv however not got that far. little bungalow with over 600m of cat5 is rather silly

Hi! Just today actually we are starting to upgrade our 13-year-old network configuration at a place.... We went with the Unifi Security Gateway, first gen cloud key, Unifi Switch 8 and 5 access points that I can't remember the name of now. Making the full switchover from wired to wireless. Should be deployed (hopefully) a week Thursday! Exciting times ahead. I just need to get our printer on 2 of the 3 networks, so I will do that in the firewall I think. Very nice video! Thank you.

I rarely comment, but, I haven’t seen anyone mention it. Running cables with a wire gauge higher then 24 can be a fire hazard. PoE can support .6 amp of current, and .35 amps can be enough to heat a gauge 26 cable past their rated specs (usually at around 60c) if they’re not of great quality. Numbers gets worse the higher the gauge and theses cable, if they’re from monoprice, are gauge 28. You should consider changing those cables for your safety when using PoE.

Great video as always! My next upgrade is to a 42U rack custom built into my office. I'm running out of space in my existing 22U rack due to some...aesthetic choices I made in having my printer mounted in the rack. Also upgrading the ethernet runs in the house to CAT 6A in the next few months. When we bought the house it was already wired for CAT 3, but that serves almost no purpose in modern networking. Luckily for me, I can use the existing lines to pull the new cable through the walls with very little effort....I hope. I've been a longtime user of Ubiquiti gear, but like some others, I went with the Edgeswitch rather than UniFi and a Netgate Firewall running PFsense. No particular reason for that other than at the time, it was all that was available, the only thing in the Unifi line back then was the AP which I also use. One AP-LR and one AP-Pro. I much prefer the pro and plan to get a second one and relegate my LR to IOT only as I have a few very chatty devices on the network. I'm looking forward to see what you think of the Unifi switches and UDM compared to the other products you've used.

Pushing out VLANs, creating rules across all 4 switches (I bought 3 UniFi Flex PoE switches, 2 of which were rolled out in 60 seconds) and centralizing all the management I was doing before has been quite nice compared to my previous setup.

i only own a tablet. my wife owns a laptop. 6 tv's that use streaming services, and some gaming consoles that use wired internet. i wired my house with cat5e. did 2 drops per room. 4 bedrooms, 1 living room and a family room. i ran 13 drops. 2 short drops for the printer at my network cabinet site. in case someone brings their laptop to the printer there will be an available port for them, and a port for the printer. all other ports are for tv's and gaming systems, and whatever is available for computers, for my wife and kids. everything that should be wired is wired for better internet connection and speeds.

UBNT could make a 'face' that allowed the ports to be shifted to the center or even far left. It would function as an adaptor / extender.

I wouoldnt have linked the patchpanels would have taken the time to pull new wires for all of them to the new setup. Tbh if you ever pull wires keep them a bit longer then needed at that moment. never know where you want to move stuff and then that beit extra wire is helpfull.

Yes, there is a such thing as too many Ethernet drops. Two days ago I was sent to a Doctors office to mount a TV and on the other side of the wall where the TV was getting mounted was the IT Closet. Come to find out 125 Data drops are in the Wall and a Toggle Bolt snagged a few cables and damaged them. One was the main DMARC feed from their AT&T connection. Didn't know this happened until yesterday. Guess they had their IT guy look things over and figured it out. I'm currently re-running five Cables as I am typing this and as a peace offering I am running CAT6a for their new DMARC feed.

@@TechnoTim you use them in place of cage nuts for square hole racks. I made a video of them and realized how horrible it was so I am going to make another review of them when I get my larger bag in a couple of days and redo much of my homelab rack layout. Keep an eye out :). They are a one piece threaded post that has a clippy part that clips into the square hole. You place a yellow plate over the post to prevent it from squeezing together and unclipping from the rack. Once that is done, you can slide your device up onto the posts and thread a cap onto the posts holding the device in place. Much faster than cage nuts and you dont sacrifice as much blood. The posts take a lot of the holding up a lot of weight issue out of the install as they help hold the device up and in place while you thread the caps on. Takes you from needing three hands to about 2 1/4. Much more expensive than cage nuts but if you buy a large bag it's not horrible especially compared to the price of the device you just mounted.

I'm working on a network upgrade for my parents, mostly going to keep it simple since they won't need a lot. Going to upgrade the unraid server I have for them, add some vm's and pfSense and let that control everything along with some better cameras and storage. For myself I will likely go with more used enterprise gear. I'm more familiar with Cisco and I have some older equipment and will then likely get some older dell servers to run my home network. I won't lie though, I really do like the look and ease of use from the unifi equipment. Could be tempting to go that route as well

Excellent set up - looking to do exactly the same but I need to run CAT6 throughout the new house. Looking at G4 doorbell and CCTV through POE too. Only (cosmetic change would be zip ties on the rear of the patch panel directly behind the keystones - but then if you tinker a lot then that isn't convenient. Great job and keep it up!

I would have re terminated all my cables but that is just me, great video, nicely explained. Ubiquiti has created this nice eco system where you can be creative with your network and what you want to accomplish. I'm an Apple fanatic and I consider Ubiquiti as the Apple in the networking world, their attention to detail even on the unboxing experience is almost the same.

Really Tim. The only thing missing in my network is a router and I just cant justify the cost that unfi does for 10G. Is the integration really that valuable to you? I am going to give opensense a try but I would love a better solution. I thought untangle was great but you pass it up. I went with aruba for my switches. The value proposition is great and future proofing. I still get Unifi AP.

Yes it is that valuable to me. A single pane of glass for all of my network, vlans, firewall, and hardware upgrades, poe, etc is worth it

@@TechnoTim I could justify the Switches and APs but what about the gate way. I have heard such bad things about the gateway. Also I don't think it will be able to handle my gigbit connection. That is why I have been looking to get a dedicated thin client for the server. Do you think I should just pull the trigger on unifi and not look back? i will have to do something else for 10G but that is not a huge deal. Qnap as some cheap 10G

Pretty cool but, I may recommend that you provide to two 1U space blocks between the switch and your punch board. I would do two 1U spaces and use a pass thru panel to route your cable down back and back out to the switch. This way you can add a second patch panel later if you want and you have room. Also I recommend that you not place you patch panel at the top. Always leave two 1U spaces for future and better space management, This is test home lab and you will be changes thing up and out over time so give yourself a break and provide space to work with. I have been there and done this 100 times. That is just my two cents worth. Keep have fun and sharing the know how! Check out my home lab videos if you want for more recommendations. Later dude!

Currently I have in my studio this setup ER-X -> Netgear gs305 and gs305e switches and Google WiFi as AP. I’m moving to new place and plan to ged rid of these two switches and replace maybe with one 16 port managed switched and UI AP to vlan segment my wireless prod from iOT devices.

Do you / did you ever find yourself wondering if you would’ve been better off with a diy pfsense router in place of your UDM Pro? I believe a pfsense router can do everything (aside from being an NVR) that a UDM Pro can do, with even more customizability, at a smaller cost. It works just as well with UDM access points as a UDM Pro would, as well. However, the GUI in pfsense is no where near as polished as that of the one in the UDM Pro, which could be a much more enjoyable experience for many people, too. I’ve been watching videos, reading through Reddit and making network diagrams with prices attached to the for about 2 weeks now and am really looking to do either the setup you made in this video, or, make a setup similar to your original setup (pfsense router -to- non Poe switch (for my PCs) -to- Poe switch (for my Poe cams and access point)) I’m stuck at the agonizing point of “WHICH IS BETTTERRR GAHHHH” Any advice?

I just upgraded but whit a udm a 16 poe switch. Is for my home I am at low scale for the moment is enough. Can you talk about how to improve security for devices only use in local network that don't need to go to the internet and the ones that need internet access. Like iot devices or home media players. How is the UDM Pro controller running with UniFi 6.x, any issues so far? I had heard the UDMs weren't supported by UniFi 6 yet, that's why they still have 5.14 installed.

I haven't had any issues. The only thing I noticed is that sometimes I have to toggle between new and old settings because some aren't complete yet.

@@TechnoTim I ended up having to revert my home and workplace controllers and restore from backup when Watchtower upgraded the containers, and my carefully setup WLAN groups and RADIUS-assigned VLANs imploded. I still feel very burned, I won't be upgrading to 6 anytime soon.

I just watched this and in light of the Ubiquity data breach do you still feel the same way and have you made any changes. I want to upgrade my Homelab and I think UniFi switches and APs are some of the best for the prosumer but not sure about the UDM Pro at this point.

I use pfsense, just purchased a new 1u supermicro “network appliance” with 6 10Gb ports that will replace my current one. I am done with ubiquiti. Spent a lot of money on their devices just to be told support end in 2021. I will still use the edge switch that I have and my long range AP. Will use the unsupported AP’s until I can afford to replace them. I have lost trust and confidence in ubiquiti and will not be buying any of their gear again.

Just to make everybody aware there is a Pro 24 and a Pro 24 POE switch. When you say PRO 24 most people assume it’s the POE version. I have both in my network and love them.

I would've gone for the XG-16 10G switch and some smaller POE implementation (alongside the UDM Pro ofc) because that switch is just expensive because of that massive 400W PSU and power delivery units.

Great video...nice setup. My only recommendation would be to reconsider using anything other than a robust device (FW) at your front door. If you said you tried pfsense...confused as to what features/functions did not satisfy your use case? Another recommendation...VMing your FW presents challenges no matter which product you use...if your going to go the VM route...you might want to consider zScaler or another vendor that provides great FW capabilities through the cloud...but then you would have subscriptions and fees associated with it. Back to pfsense...100% free! All you have to do is supply the hardware...it will run flawlessly on just about anything...except Intel based NICs are best to use for long term reliability. Good luck

How load is this poe switch, I work next to my rack so I try to keep it as quiet as possible. Personally I use unifi accesspoints but all my routers and switches are Mikrotik but I do a lot of complex networking and this was not your cup of tea.

You're right, this is the model that has fans but it doesn't make any audible noise, at least with the 8 PoE devices and 16 other non PoE devices plugged in.

I install ubiquiti products for all of my clients. This is a great choice for an upgrade. Nicely done! Also great choice not to terminate all the cables. Punching down cables is never a fun thing :)

I will probably start on my new NAS soon because my current one is almost full (HP Microserver Gen8 with 32TB running FreeNAS). Will probably go with an i5-10400F (On sale for $140 here in Sweden right now), ASRock B460 Gaming 5 motherboard and 64GB RAM (3x32GB) so I can upgrade to 128GB later if needed. For storage I will be using Seagate Exos 16TB drives and it will be running TrueNAS Core since it's officially released now. Next step is to get a rack and upgrade my home network from Gbit to 10 Gbit.

ubiqiti gear is a bit shit based on the last time I looked at it. Can't access any setup functionality on the UDM pro without an internet connection out of the box. Nice UI but its just budget hardware pretending to have enterprise features

You can use a local account of you want. You only have to use a vpn of portforward for remote access.
