Bought a house in vegas last year. People looked at me like im insane when i told them I want to have a food forest in the middle of vegas. No HOA. 1 year later I have 40 fruit trees. Veggies/healthy soil a she shed converted into a living room. Close to 150 different species of flowering bush/herbs and spices. And chickens. Love this video

Yes, since you asked, a plant based diet is the way to go. Thank you for all the wonderful videos. I live in an apartment in Utah. So you've inspired me to grow microgreens on a much larger scale. Yipee…chickens !!! So many fun breeds now too. When I had chicks, the choices were pretty much limited to Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks. Will be fun to hear all the cute “ chicken noises” while you garden. DE is great for them to take their dust baths in to prevent mites btw

I've been putting some mizuna in small quantities in a simple mixed salad of various greens, to add variety of color, shapes, and flavor. The salad is mostly lettuce as the base. Ruby red leaf and red salad bowl lettuce has done well for me this fall. Then a little bit of each: red streaks mizuna, Tokyo bekana, arugula. And a fair bit of tatsoi, I like how sweet tatsoi is. Then I throw in a small cut up tomato and give it a basic Italian dressing. Sometimes I add a few dashes of home made orange habanero sauce to the dressing, and that's works surprisingly well. I stopped adding frisee endive to my salad as it's just too bitter for me. Though the endive was nice as a braised green. Started with onions sauteed in olive oil and butter, added water, vinegar, sugar, hot sauce and the frisee endive. Cooked it down until the endive was tender. But that's my go to for basically all greens. Beet greens, turnip greens, radish greens, swiss chard, etc.

I'm glad you mentioned that mizuna is great in salads. It's SO good raw and is literally the only way I eat it. One of the faves for fall/winter. Epic leek haul. I'm in Cardiff but def making my way to Walter Andersen bc I'm LATE on starting seeds this year and need to pick up some of those. 😬 LMK if you need a solid rec for getting super healthy pullets. So excited for you...chickie-doodles are literally the best thing ever. So fun.

Once you get the coop up, you should put some dandelions or other deep rooted plants in there along with clover and a variety of grasses. That way there's a solid crop of plant material full of protein, minerals, phyto-nutrients, etc that make chickens happy. Some grasses that would be good would be alfalfa, oat, fescue, flax. There are also premade blends you can purchase that has all this stuff for generalized locations. I'd personally throw in some beet seeds as well. Healthy snack they have to work for It's essentially what I do for feed plots for deer and turkeys, high protein forage that contains lots of omega fatty acids and minerals for the healthiest food for the animals. Should make the eggs from your layers super healthy and decrease the risk of common nutrition-based health issues in the chickens.

It blows my mind that you're planting in the ground in mid-November! I've just finished prepping my garden for next season, we won't see any garden products like seedlings or seed potatoes until at least April 2022. I would love to have bulk seed potatoes like that, we just get pre-bagged seed potatoes, and only a couple of varieties are available each year. So jealous :) For reference, I live in zone 3.

Hi Kevin! I grow a crap ton of Mizuna, usually direct sowing them all over the place. It's a great thing to grow in my area because birds and other animals eat just about everything else. But, not the mizuna! the mizuna has free reign to grow in my backyard. I'm currently sitting on about 20 lbs of mizuna or more. Usually, I make a monster salad in my biggest party bowl that I fill with mizuna, tomatoes, and dried fruits. other times i just juice it.
