HUGE tornado in Birmingham, AL 4/27/11 6PM

tornado outbreak today. lived here my whole life and have never seen one make it to downtown Birmingham.

I live about 5 blocks from Downtown Birmingham and to see the tornado better, I went up on I 20/59 to see it better. MY GOD it was the most amazing, scariest thing that I have ever seen in my life!!!!

I realize the video doesn't do this justice, but I can imagine that rumbling or roaring sound you heard must've been the most ominous thing ever. Especially from that distance.

This tornado was massive between a half mile and a mile wide the path of destruction it cut from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham and on up into North AL, was a mile wide. It even took out the long train tressel bridge between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham.

Yeah I saw this yesterday on The Weather Channel. Up here in Tennessee, we got hit pretty hard as well.

Missed a friend's house by 2 blocks. Can't imagine seeing such as this in person.

@neener63 same for me up here in east limestone, (couple miles west of huntsville), i was like "dear god there is NO WAY that is a tornado. I CANT SEE IT!" then when it passed by our house we got a TON of wind and large hail. and then debris started falling out of the sky and we knew it was a tornado then.

If it had been just a ½ mile further south, it would have been catastrophic on a whole seperate level. It would have been what some call an "EF-6"
