Not true that this unibody 2012 is the last macbook to be upgradeable. Lots of later macs are upgradeable. The Retina can have larger ssd, and the macbook air 2017 can have up to 4tb ssd upgrade.

Probably best to factory reset the current hard drive then clone.

Yes you can use the BX500 1TB which is the same size. I just upgraded mine with the BX500 along with maxing out the RAM too. My OG macbook pro is back in business.

i have a mid 2012 as well and used opencore patcher to install sequoia (the latest os) and it runs pretty good on my hdd, it would probably be very smooth on an ssd

I have a couple of 2012s ... I have loved them, upgraded them, but ... they won't take any more OS upgrades, unless I am mistaken .... we are stuck on 10.15 .... or are we? Please advise if you know!

@j0ju Google OpenCore Legacy Patcher, supposedly this will update you to the latest OS even if your Macbook is really old. I would try it myself if I had a spare laptop.

When attempting to reformat, I am not given the option to format as APFS, only the following: four options for "Mac OS Exteneded" with some combination of "Journaled", "Case-sensitive," and "Encrypted"; "ExFAT"; and "MS-DOS (FAT)." @@VOIDEDPAST which macbook pro do you have? I have the mb pro mid 2012, I did max out the RAM to 16GB and got the Crucial BX500 1TB SSD. Installation was simple and easy and now my macbook pro is running better and faster than when I bought it brand new years ago.

Yes just install SSD and then use internet recovery to install new OS on fresh drive.

Careful!!!! You cannot use an SSD as a storage device. They work great as your computer engine disk because they are so fast, but if you start storing large amount of data on an SSD you cannot even get much futher than 50% storage space before it crashes (and because of crash it's hard to clean out). This actually only works in combination with an HHD in place or your optical drive so you can still use all your files and your computer won't have to write data to the SSD.

5:42 JESUS NO! NEVER lift up on a sata drive like that EVER while it is connected! He is just lucky he didn't damage the drive or adapter. Always slide the drive straight out of the connection before removing it or you are likely to have a bad time.

Why are people still doing this in 2024? The macOS is unsupported for security updates (for years now, there are many severe vulnerabilities that make the MacBook vulnerable), and even if you don't care about security, many apps now no-longer support versions of macOS this odd, many websites (like KZbin) wont run on versions of Safari this old. This makes the MacBook fairly useless.
